Anyone give DC Poly-vi-sol or Tri-vi-sol?

I bought some Poly-vi-sol for Connor today to help make up for the lack of vitamin D that he does not get.

I was wondering do you give your DC the one with iron or without?  I bought the one without b/c I heard that it can constipate them but I also heard that the extra iron will help with their psychomotor and mental development in infants and children.

If you have your DC the one with iron did they have an issue with constipation?  Did anyone of you talk to your pedi about giving the vitamins to your DC?  If so what do they think about it?

Re: Anyone give DC Poly-vi-sol or Tri-vi-sol?

  • We give Ben the Tri-vi-sol, as instructed by the pedi. ?Have been giving it to him since he was a few weeks old. ?The doc specifically told me to use the Tri-vi-sol since I am breastfeeding. ?If the baby is formula fed, then you should use the Poly-vi-sol. ?You are still BF, right? ?Sounds like you made the right choice then. ?BF babies don't need extra iron. ?I just started giving Ben fluoride drops too, for his teeth.

You can always call the pedi to check, but mine "prescribed" it and still wants Ben to take them...?

  • Beth, I just re-read your post and it sounds like you bought the one WITH iron if you bough Polyvisol. ?In that case, you may want to check with the pedi because mine said specifically NOT to take that one since I am BF.
  • Our peditrician recommended we give Kaelyn Tri-vi-sol beginning at 2 weeks old.  She speficially recommended that one not they Poly so that is what I got.  I would caution you about giving Connor the one with iron unless that is what your Dr. recommended.  Just check with you Dr. to make sure.

  • Charlotte gets one dropperful of Poly-Vi-Sol mixed into a pumped bottle everyday.  I wanted Tri-Vi-Sol but Wally World only had it with iron which she doesn't need.  This was all based on the pedi recommendations, besides that I knew she needed the Vitamin D.  And yes, the iron can cause constipation issues and breastfed babies really don't need any additional iron for at least 6 months.  Breastmilk is lower in iron but the iron that is present is more easily absorbed than the supplements.  Just an FYI, the stuff tastes nasty so you definately have to mix it in a bottle to get him to take it.
