DH & I have dreamt of moving to southern CA for a very long time. We currently own a home & are fixing it up a little to sell in about a year. Within that time, we want to travel to diff. cities to figure out what's best for us to move. DH used to live there (military) though things have sure changed. We've visited a few times.
We are looking for an apartment or condo to rent to get to know the areas better. We need a 1 bedroom, balcony, updated, clean, good neighborhood. I plan to work in an office (marketing/exec admin fields). DH is on military disability & will be our main source of income. We're laid back beachy type casual people, like to sit outdoors to eat/drink, stroll the boardwalks, people watch, etc.
Can you recommend some areas to look into and/or stay away from? What are typical rent prices like? we're not picky, though don't want a shabby place. I picture a small complex with a pool and accessible to things to do (strip malls, restaurants, grocery, etc) which seems like every other suburb which is fine. Want to be able to drive to beach cities in the evenings.
thanks very much for any insight or help. We don't really know where to begin our scouting trip, so if we could focus on a certain area, that'd help a lot.
Re: XP: Moving to CA
I live in Oceanside, which is close to the ocean and offers plenty to do. Depending on traffic, we're about half an hour from San Diego. My husband and I are both currently enlisted so we live close to Camp Pendleton for that reason. You may or may not want to be so close to a military base.
We both love the complex we live in. Rent is a little high-around $1500 per month-but we have a spacious apartment with two bedrooms, two baths, a balcony, and washer and dryer. The neighborhood we live in is quiet and well-kept and there are schools within walking distance from our house along with a huge park we visit on the weekends.
We live in downtown/Little Italy area. LOVE IT! Our first complex, Camden Tuscany had a pool. 1 bedroom rents can be around $1600. Less, depending, or more depending. But downtown is so great, you are 10 minutes from Coronado (best beaches), 15 min from OB & PB, and right near the gaslamp and the bay.
Good luck! This was our dream too and we moved here last year from NJ! Its been amazing, we are very happy here.
Like anywhere, prices will vary GREATLY based on how close you are to things. If you want to walk to places, be prepared to spend between $1200 - $2000 a month.
We live in Pacific Beach - a part of san diego that's young, centrally located and right on the water. We have a 2BR 1BA house in a great neighborhood and pay $2000 a month. I love it! We are close to lots of places to walk to. We walk to the beach every day.
You could live near the beach anywhere between Oceanside and Imperial Beach, but the main issue is going to be traffic. Will you be working at all? That can make a difference. I work in La Jolla, so my commute is very short.
HTH!
After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
SMP21-I live in Montecito Village. It's a gated apartment complex with a pool and some other amenities. I've had good experiences with the staff that works here and I would recommend it to anyone.
I'm originally from Los Angeles, so my husband and I go up about once every four to six weeks to visit family. It takes anywhere from two to three hours to drive there depending on traffic. San Diego is a short drive south and Carlsbad, Escondido and other North County cities are nearby.
The beach is only seven miles away and we're close too Oceanside's harbor and pier. Plenty of surfers enjoy the waves in this area and a lot of people fish off the pier. The farmers market is also held right by the pier on Thursdays so if you're interested, its a good place to go for the atmosphere.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I'd be happy to help. Good luck with the move!
