Yikes! CPS Bill

Ok, so after last month's shocker I decided that there is no way I can afford these high CPS bills. I ran around the house making tons of changes. I upped the temp in the house 2 degrees on each programmed setting, I unplugged just about everything, put up curtains in 3 rooms, closed off the vent and kept the door closed in the spare room. You would think it would make some kind of difference right? Nope. The bill went up $30. Any one else having the same experience? What are you doing to keep the cost down? (Keep in mind my house is only 1400 sqft and 1 story)

Re: Yikes! CPS Bill

  • What about changing out lightbults to the compact flourecents (I know I spelled that wrong).  I've also heard that chargers like cell phone chargers, battery chargers etc still use a lot of energy even when they aren't being used so you should unplug those.  I've heard that you should put your TV's on power strips because even when they are off they use energy and so does the cable box, dvd player, TiVo etc so you should put them all on a power strip and flip it off when they aren't in use.  I havent' tried it but that's what I've heard.  I think the best thing would be to pray for 70 degree days.  :)
  • oh yeah, we're doing the light bulb thing but only as they die out. I would say half the house has them. I also turned down the temp on the water heater. I must have a leak or something somewhere.

  • I almost cried when I opned our bill!  It is just crazy!  I keep our blinds closed, things are unpluged, and the AC is not set low!  What they charge per day is almost doubled this month compared to last month!  It's Crazy!!
  • Yeah ours went up $40 and one whole week we were in CA and our thermostat was set at 83!! Crazy!

I just bumped all the thermostats up 2 degrees when we are here and 3 when we are gone.

We have the energy saving light bulbs, energy efficient appliances, everything we don't use is unplugged, etc. I don't know what else to do either.

  • Allright Lauren...let's play. But, let's play at a per square foot rate.

1900 square feet....$336.00 last month.?$.17 per square foot.

?I about died when I opened the bill.?

  • omg- you have me beat! 2800 sq ft- $330 for our CPS bill... ummm... I don't have a calculator handy, someone do the math for me!

  • Holy crap ladies! Mine was $200 for 1400 sqf. Only up $30 from the previous month though. Lauren I would have died if mine jumped as much as yours did.

  • Our last bill was $293 and we live in an 1100 sq ft apt.  They did make a mistake on the previous bill so part of that was catch up.

Keep in mind their power rates went up.  So even if you used the exact same amt of power, your bill would be higher.

Faith you are doing all the right things.  You can check window sills for leaks using a match or incense.

search around on the energy star website or something.  I once found this fun tool that you could enter specs for your house and it would help you find problems.
