I am having my DS's first bday party this Saturday at our new house. We just made settlement a month ago so my house is still not totally set-up. The party starts at 3pm and I am looking to make some fall inspired dishes, any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a big batch of chili and a friend suggested a mash potato bar {but I have never done this before}. I also wanted to have one or two drinks, like a cider or something? And lastly what are some quick decor ideas I can do {fall inspired} that will dress up the table and not be too expensive?
Thanks for the help!
Re: Need menu/decor ideas
I just did the little man's first birthday this past weekend. Here's the link to the menu: http://jaimecooks.wordpress.com/2009/10/20/carter%e2%80%99s-first-birthday-party/
For decorations, I did colorful, and disposable, tablecloths with glass vases filled with jelly bellys in coordinating colors. I did balloons too.
Check my bio - I did a fall dinner party a month ago. It was for adults, but the menu and ideas might inspire you.
For decor, small gourds are on sale now at the grocery store for a few cents each and you can pick up a $10 bunch of flowers and be all set.
I mix 2/3 not-too-sweet sweet tea with 1/3 apple cider or apple juice for a great fruit tea.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Not sure how many people you're planning on having, but here's my menu for my husband's birthday party this week. I thought corn fritters (as opposed to corn bread) would be a different accompaniment to chili.

I've seen a potato bar suggested in a couple different posts, but I don't know, I'm not such a fan of the idea.
You might also try a zucchini / squash bread or cake (there's a chocolate zucchini cake recipe somewhere).
As for drinks, there were a couple of good apple drink recipes on the cooking board, I think two days ago. You might check there for apple-inspirations, there's been a bunch lately.
For my halloween party I just put apple cider in a crockpot with cinnamon sticks. I've also seen people put cloves in an orange (stick them in the peal) and then put that in the cider pot too for flavoring.
I put a bottle of spiced rum out next to it and then people could make their drinks as potent (or not) as they wanted. It seemed to work well.
This wouldn't be for kids, but a unique fall food for adults I make is an apple cider based fondue that I serve in a pumpkin. Look at receipezaar for the appler cider fondue recipe. Bake a hollowed out pie pumpkin at 350 for 30 min with butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. Make the fondue on the stove or in a fondue pot and then pour it into the pumpkin. I serve it with green apples and bread.
