Madison Area ?'s

I just took a position in Madison, and my husband and I will be moving there from Michigan.  Can you girls help me out by telling me what areas we should look at to live in?  We are going to be renting an apartment for the first couple months, and I'm overwhelmed by all of the areas available.  Are there any areas that I want to avoid?

Thanks!

Re: Madison Area ?'s

  • Do you want an older house or a newer house?  Do you want to live in the city, or do you want to live in a suburb?  What area of town will you and your husband be working at (east side, west side, downtown)?

The east side is generally cheaper than the west side.  There aren't many places to avoid.

I live on the east side of Madison in a new subdivision.  However, if money wasn't an issue and I wanted to live near downtown in an older home with character, I'd live in the University Heights area of Madison.  If money wasn't an issue and I wanted to live on the far west side, I'd live in Middleton.  Middelton has both older and newer homes.

  • I live in the University Depths (down the hill from University Heights, lol), it's really nice here. Close to everything.

I think some of the apartment complexes around West Towne mall are sort of scummy, but you can check the crime statistics by area at http://tinyurl.com/5blq3w.

What I would think about, though, is what side of town he will be working on. I would avoid having to drive through the isthmus to get to and from work, if possible. It can be a real pain at times.

  • I'm sorry, I misread. I thought you said that your husband had gotten a job here. Same applies, though.

  • I think you'll really love Madison -- we moved here last summer from Philadelphia and we really like it a lot.

I don't know very much about the rental market in Madison, unfortunately, so I can't help you out an awful lot there. We live very close to the Hilldale Mall - the neighborhood is called Sunset Village. It's technically the Near West side, I believe. We're really happy here -- close to everything, good streets for going on walks, safe and quiet. Our street even has a "Taste of ___ Street" party every summer for the residents here. It has been really welcoming. The madison city website has a database that has all kinds of information about the different neighborhoods. That might be a good place for you to start.

  • I've lived in Madison most of my life (born in Texas) and love it. I think it would depend on where the job is. I've lived on the North Side, West Side, East Side and suburbs. I HATE the Beltline so I'd try to live as close as I could without having to hit the Beltline...
