a 1/2 game suspension?!

So Brandon Spikes is suspended for 1/2 of our next game for eye-gouging in Saturday's game (story).  In the big scheme of things, I don't think this is an awful offense. I know lots of crazy stuff happens in piles, but still . . . it's about sportsmanship and sending a message to young fans about what is and what isn't acceptable.  What is a 1/2 game suspension going to do?  That's a slap on the wrist.  Either punish him or not, but don't try to disguise this as a real punishment.

Re: a 1/2 game suspension?!

  • I think it was a dirty thing to do and his powder puff of a punishment definitely sends some wrong messages...one of which being that the last thing on Urban Meyer's mind is doing the right thing.

  • If it's OK with Urban and the SEC Commish, then it's OK by me.

  • ...and I'm still waiting for Mark Richt to 'turn in' HIS players who committed all the (un-called) late hits, helmet-grabbing, eye-poking, etc.  Like that's gonna happen.

  • According to DH, this happens all the time in piles.  You get kicked, bit, eyes gouged, you name it.  It just happened that he got caught and is being made an example of.  It's a BS punishment though.  Clearly everyone knows it happens, but they want to show they "don't tolerate this behavior."  Ooookay!
  • Yes it happens all the time, but that doesn't make it ok (I HATE that argument). Hopefully if they punish those they catch, it will decrease the occurences.

But this punishment is ridiculous. At least make it a whole game.

Exactly.  Either you accept that it happens and it's ok and there will be no punishment or you don't accept it and you punish it seriously. at least give him a whole game.

  • I am glad to see a FL fan speak out against this.

I think Urban Meyer is sending a terrible message to his players. I am ashamed of him.

Sometimes I wonder who they think they're kidding?  Obviously everyone knows it happens, but your player gets caught and you're going to make a half-azz effort at a punishment.  Yes, we're really all that stupid.

Urban Meyer AND the SEC, you mean.

  • I was really hoping the SEC would step in and say that the punishment needs to be more than Urban gave him.

So do I, just so everyone would shut the heck up about it.  Stick out tongue

Yes your right. SEC had authority in this situation as well.

And the whole argument that other players were doing it is idiotic. Lots of people drive drunk and don't get caught. Doesn't mean the person who does get caught drinking and driving has any authority to claim that he was just doing what others also do.

Seriously??  What would you consider to be awful? If that had been the other team's player getting caught trying to gouge Tebow or Spikes, I'm sure the opinions would be different.

Your boy Ealey doesn't see what all the fuss is about.

  • I completely agree with the original post... They don't need him for Vandy, anyway. Let him rest a game... I think that the 1/2 game is more of a message to UGA saying that the Gator's aren't taking it seriously b/c it's UGA.

On the flip side, there are reports of Spikes and another player whose eyes are swollen shut (Spike is also missing hair) from dirty UGA tactics. Two wrongs do not make it right... it's just unfortunate that the other guys didn't get caught, or punished for the things they blatantly did.

  • Did you see where Brandon stated that he will not be playing at all on Saturday? He said that he didn't want to be a distraction.
