nutrition ladies - thoughts please
So I saw this post on the 6+ month board, is it true about rice cereal? I thought it was good for iron intake? (the OP was about constipation from solids)
TIA!
"Do not give a baby rice cereal after the first introduction to food.
It's not really nutritious (it's not bad, it's just got nothing good in
it) and it's like stuffing cotton in their intestines."
Re: nutrition ladies - thoughts please
I know the Le Leche League suggests bypassing rice cereal and starting with avacado or sweet potato...
Oh yeah, I should have read the guide to solids I got from the LLleague. They also suggest giving baby a chicken bone to teeth on , that i DO not plan on doing.
Does anyone know if the happybellies brand of organic brown rice with "probiotics" is really any better than gerber stuff. The package claims it is rec'd by Dr. Sears, that is who the LLLeague quotes in all their stuff too.
We had a discussion about rice cereal at BF support group, the LC thought BF babies needed the iron. Now I am not sure!!!
Try to remember that eating at 4-9 months or so is about experience and learning how to, not nutrition. Honestly, if the 1 tablespoon of rice cereal binds up your baby, try oatmeal or barley. Cereal is a texture they should attempt. I wasn't a huge cereal giver, in fact it was mostly mixed with veggies and fruits, but I do think her exposure to all sorts of textures is part of the reason why she will EAT as a toddler. (Rice is usually suggested because most of the population isn't allergic to it.) I can't tell you how many of our friends who have children who gag and choke on everything that isn't mushed or liquid-like. Again, it is about exposure- as in exposing them to life long eating habits and techniques (eating with a spoon, tasting different flavors/textures, having meals around the time we as adults eat). But the nutrition and iron should still come from formula or breastmilk.?
?
my baby has some eating issues and each specialist we see recommends either Earth's Best or Beech Nut. We never use Gerber and only did rice cereal for three days to ensure no allergic reaction. I then moved to brown rice, barley and then multigrain. Good luck!
I'm glad you are 3 months ahead of me and ask all these questions so I can learn, I have no clue about this stuff! I really need to write down all these questions for her next checkup.
A chicken bone? That sounds crazy to me!
Ditto Marie about it being more about texture and experience. While there is some iron in the rice cereal, it's not the baby's main source of nutrition. In fact, the amount should be limited because it does fill their bellies, making them not hungry for BM/formula, which should be their nutrition. It may be constipating; if so, try another kind of single grain cereal.
Someone mentioned Earth's Best . . . the jarred fruits and veggies are ok, but I would strongly caution against using any of their "solid" products (biter buscuits, cereal bars, etc...) for your older baby. Those products are manufactures on equipment that also processes high allergen foods (peanuts and treenuts especially) and it is NOT listed on their label.
