Long story day vent

Ok, ladies who changed/are changing your names, is this happening to you too?  Or is it just me?

When I changed my name, I made my maiden name my middle name, figuring it would be a lot easier in the transition and any documents I wasn't going to change (diplomas and the like) would nonetheless be reflected in my new name.  Let's say my old name was Clare E Smith, then I married Husband Jones so I want my name to be (and have LEGALLY changed my name with the state and national government to) Clare S Jones.

Every single company is TELLING me my name is Clare E Jones.  To change my frequent flier card at United (such a minute, and tiny piece of paper, what a grand waste of my time) I had to SEND them a COPY of my MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE (sorry for the screaming, but I find it ridiculous that a frequent flier program needs more documentation than our utilities).  I told them my name was Clare Jones and signed the letter Clare Jones.  I get the card back: Clare E Jones.  I just got off the phone with the slowest operator in the world who tells me that in order to fix the mistake THEY made I have to do it all over again and send them a new letter.  It's one initial!  And their mistake!

I have also recently found out that to change my name on our property taxes I need to file a (notarized) quit claim deed and then re-apply (or whatever) with my new name.  That's just for taxes.  That's not even to change my name on the title of our house.  I'm not even ready to find out what that's going to take.

I feel like, I changed my name and I am doing them a favor, telling them.  I could just not tell them and screw up all their records and paperwork.  But I am being honest, writing letters and sending documents.  Why is this still so hard?

Re: Long story day vent

  • Haha. You're not making me feel any better about my decision to do the same.

I just started the process last week. (yes, over 4 months after the wedding). I did the same thing - dropped my middle name, changed my middle to my maiden and took my husband's last name. Before I was SLB and now I am SBL. I know I am going to run into problems with this for sure.

I've only got as far as my SS card, but I am doing the license / registraion thing tomorrow which should be a blast I am sure.

  • I changed my name the same way you did.  I also found my FF card to be a ridiculous transition (a different company than yours, but the also required a copy of the cert).  I don't even know why I bothered, we don't fly them much anymore...

I haven't really had issues.  Bills were quick to pick up on it (they want their money!).  City didn't give any flack.  Work has been fine aside from still not having sent me a new insurance card.

One that did kind of surprise me was when I called about my TWIC card.  For those not familiar, TWIC cards are federally issued government IDs used in ports and airports.  A Homeland Security thing, issued by TSA.  I use it for my job.  I got it issued in my maiden name when we'd barely gotten engaged.  Apparently either they are incredibly greedy or they never figured people might want to change their names.  I called this past week to inquire about changing the name on my card and was told I'd have to reapply and do the whole process over again.  Its a big process.  Cost the company $135ish, I had to provide my birth cert, license, passport, SS card...even all 10 fingerprints.  I figured I could bring in the updated license & SS card along with the marriage license and all would be well.  Notsomuch.  The lady at TSA's response, "If it were me I'd just keep the one in the maiden name until it expires."

ETA: I just thought of another ID that I've had an issue with, but thats a case of my husband not reviewing documents before submitting them.  My military dependent ID has the wrong middle initial, it has the one I was given when born not my former maiden name.  The person at Pass & ID just dropped my maiden name and slapped the husbands last name on there.  Nobody's commented on it yet...

That is ridiculous.  I'm surprised you didn't have to promise them your firstborn child.

After the fingerprint thing I was waiting for them to ask, that was my thought too.  They were really thorough and I think a background check was done too.  I get the need for the documentation and such though, the work is in areas where if someone wanted to they could do harm to things/people/infrastructure.  I'd be concerned if they weren't so thorough, the fingerprint thing threw me though.  I was the first in my office to get the ID and had to warn people what to expect.  Now my fingerprints are in a federal database...like on CSI...guess I better stay away from committing felonies, LOL.  Not sure if they didn't plan ahead for the name change situation or if they are just greedy.  I'm taking the ladies advice and sticking with what I have until it becomes an issue or the card expires.

  • I am in the system too. I have secret clearance for my previous job for a government contractor which required fingerprints. I've been finger printed and friends have been interviewed about my past. Kinda crazy.
  • The whole name change process seems ridiculous and daunting to me. I think this is why I haven't taken it on yet. I am afraid to start all over again because people in these administrative-type jobs are total MORONS and make triple the work for you. Really irritating. I'm afraid my identity will be completely lost somewhere along the way by these idiots!
  • It is a big hassle and what gets me is my DH has no idea how much of pia it really is. I was considering keeping my last name/hyphenating and he threw a hissy fit that he wanted us to have the same last name (I totally get it...was just thinking) but couldn't care less that it's paperwork after paperwork to get it done. I've told him he has to fill out the next form for name change that I have to get done. I'm giving him part of the headache!

  • For the record its not much less of a headache if you keep your middle name rather than your maiden name as your middle initial.  They still screw it up and you still have to provide tons of documentation.  The whole process sucks - it really shouldnt be that hard.  And I dont get frequent flyer programs either - why do I have to provide a birth certificate to them but my bank/credit card companies will jsut take my word for it?  Ridiculous.
  • Reading all your posts makes me sooooo happy I kept my name!!!

Me too (about not understanding)!  He wasn't making a big deal about me changing it, but I would come to him and say things like "I got my new driver's license!" or "I changed our name with the cable company!" and he'd be like "oh, okay."  That wasn't easy, mister!  I had to go down there with my new ID and wait in line for an hour.
