I just don't understand

How can people be so vocal and so OVERJOYED about their opposition to gay marriage rights?  Do they not realize how ridiculous they sound?  I saw footage on the news this morning of people in Maine celebrating when the gay marriage law was officially overturned.  People should not be allowed to vote on civil rights.

?This is an amazing moment. It?s beyond words,?? said Mary Conroy, spokeswoman for Yes on 1/Stand for Marriage Maine, the organization leading the fight against same-sex marriage in Maine. ?I feel energized, overcome, overjoyed for the family and the people of Maine."

Conroy said most of the Stand for Marriage supporters are ordinary families who are worried that children will read stories about same-sex couples in schools, that teenagers will be encouraged to experiment with their sexuality, and that same-sex marriage will become widespread. She said that gays and lesbians have won antidiscrimination protections and should ?leave marriage alone.??

?No one?s antigay,?? she said. ?It?s just whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. . . . Not so fast.??

I mean, wtf is this lady talking about?  No one is antigay... they just don't want their kids to know about gay people and turn out to be gay.  Confused  What is wrong with gay marriage becoming more widespread?

Sorry, just had to let this out somewhere.

  • I really just don't understand it either.
  • I was so pissed when I read about that this morning, people are ridiculous and I agree that they shouldn't be allowed to vote on civil rights.

I especially love it when people say they're protecting the "institution of marriage." Seriously? How about we make divorce illegal, I feel that would protect "marriage" better than forbidding two people who love each other to do it. Ugh..

Seriously, I do not understand how she said they aren't anti-gay, they are just 'woah woah waoh' Ummm wtf does that even mean?

EXACTLY!  I would a million times prefer for my child to be in a happy homosexual marriage that lasts for 50 years, than to be in a heterosexual marriage that ends in divorce.  Kids these days learn that divorce is just fine, an easy solution to a problem if you don't get along with your spouse.  It is amazing.

  • It just makes me so sad and upset... I post on the Maine board as well since it's my original home state/ where I got married/ where we want to move back to... and everyone is so upset.

If you want to gag, read the Letters to the Editor at www.sunjournal.com... it makes me SICK.

  • There is so much wrong with that little clip you quoted that I don't even know where to begin.  This makes me sad.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • These sentiments are incredibly disconcerting to me, and touch such deeply seated issues.

Do they realize what their opposition feeds into?  The likelihood of gay teens committing suicide is as high quadruple that of any other teen demographic.  Is this really what they ultimately hope to achieve?

And the fear that "teenagers will be encouraged to experiment with their sexuality", just feeds into all kinds of issues.  These are probably parents who are discussing sexuality in absolute terms, and don't seem like they'd be willing to discuss sexuality and identity with their kids.  Which certainly doesn't foster a healthy approach to relationships whether they're gay or straight.

  • It makes me proud to live in Massachusetts, but I agree. I just don't get the opposition to gay marriage. I thought we had progressed in our attitudes towards gay people, but this makes me wonder. How do two loving people in a same sex marriage threaten others? It boggles my mind.
  • I had to turn the news off this morning. Listening to the people cheering and some of the comments they were making, just so awful.

This was always my question, and I think from the woman's quote above I get why they feel threatened.  They realize that by having many positive examples of same sex marriage easily visible, their kids will think that it is an acceptable thing, and will be open to entering a same sex relationship/marriage themselves.  The parents want their kids to know in no uncertain terms that it is NOT OKAY for them to be in a same sex marriage.  Having these positive examples around threatens their ability to brainwash their kids.  This is what I am getting anyway, not trying to put words into someone's mouth.

  • ugh I'm glad I didn't see this myself, I would have been so angry at the original footage. It's ridiculous, how can people be glad that others don't have rights? Would they also be glad if there was segregation and women couldn't vote? It's all the same thing.
  • People care way too much about things that 1. Have nothing to do with them and 2. Do not affect them and the way they live their own life in any way.

No kidding, I don't see how denying a couple marriage is protecting it?  It's more like they want to preserve marriage as an exclusive club.

Not only that, which is horrible in itself, it feeds on the hate that some people hold toward anyone different, which can lead to violent acts that they think are ok.

Exactly!! This is what I really don't understand.  How can someone revel in the fact that they are denying rights to someone?
  • it really just makes me sick...
