relocating to san diego

my job is relocating me to san diego next month.   any recommendations on which are to live in?   my job will be in the gaslamp district and my husband's sister lives in chula vista.   we are thinking about fashion valley area possibly?   we are probably looking for an apartment for now and are thinking about buying a small dog (a puggle!).   any advice is appreciated!

Re: relocating to san diego

  • If you live in the Fashion Valley/Mission Valley area, you can take the trolley into downtown and you wont have to worry about commuting and parking in downtown.

There are a few higher end apartment complexes in those areas.

Please do NOT buy a puggle--if you have your heart set on a pug, we have some great animal rescue groups and shelters out here that can help you find a pug or a pug mix.  Check with ther San Diego Humane Society, San Diego County Animal Shelter, Escondido Human Society, and the local Pug Rescue

  • Fashion Valley is nice, but you might also consider Mission Hills or Hillcrest, which are nearby.

And ditto Terra.  Don't buy a mixed breed dog.  They come from puppy mills.  No reputable breeder will take two perfectly good breeds, make up a ridiculous sounding name, and sell it for a profit.  There are plenty of pug mixes at the local shelters.

You never know what you'll get with mixed breeds..you might get the howling/barking of the beagle with the snorting of the pug.  They can't predict the size, either, so you might end up with one that's closer to 30 lbs, hardly small.

  • Pps have you covered on the where to live question. I just want to reiterate please please please do NOT buy a "puggle" (pug/beagle mix).  There are plenty in rescue - in fact, I was showing one at our adoption day last week! (but I live in AZ now).   There is no reason to help perpetuate the cycle of greed that goes into breeding mixed breed dogs.  There are absolutely NO reputable breeders who would breed mutts, knowing the horrendous pet overpopulation problem we have.  And if you do decide to rescue one, make sure you do your research on both breeds and make sure you are OK with your dog having any or all of the traits both breeds carry.  One of the major reasons pug/beagles end up in rescue is because people didn't expect the beagle howl/bark.  This could really be a problem in an apartment.

  • If your job will be in Gaslamp, I'd live downtown. It's my favorite part of SD (we live in Cortez hill). There are so many great areas of downtown, some more residential than others.

And yes, rescue!!! We just got our jack russell from the Barking Lot...there are so many organizations around here since there are so many unwanted dogs from Mexico.

    Good luck! Welcome to SD.
