Actually Pita, they spent a lot of years proving it can't. Trust me...I lived though the 80's and early 90's. They had the highest payroll then too, and they SUCKED!
Of course, i am still fully convinced that Don Mattingly has some kind of curse on him. They sucked when he played for them. He retired, and they won 4 championships. He came back as coach...and they lost a 7 game series that had a 3 game lead in to the Red Sox. And then there's the Dodgers this year. I love me some Donnie Baseball, I'm just asyin...
Everyone knows that Donnie Baseball is cursed. In related news, MLB built a $3M baseball complex in Prague to use for scouting. Only one street on the entire complex is named. It's called "Mattingly Way".
As for the money argument, I don't really understand how the Yankees stand for the proposition that money will buy you world championships when the vast majority (20) of their wins came at a time before Mr. Steinbrenner flooded the organization with cash. Even in the 1970's players didn't make a whole lot of dough.
Under that line of thinking, the Yankees should only have as many wins pre-Steinbrenner as the next closest team (the Cardinals at 10).
I actually know someone that named their daughter Mattingly. How sick is that?
Not as sick as DH wanting to use the name Seven. I so hate George Costanza for that.
