Childbirth Classes?

Hi Ladies,

Do any of you know of places that give free birthing classes?

Re: Childbirth Classes?

  • I've never seen any free ones. We took one at the hospital and it was a total waste of my time. I learned more watching discover channel baby shows and reading books. I used nothing in that class during labor or birth

  • Good to know... I was learning towards not going to any at all, and I am not about to pay upwards of $150 for information I won't use. Thank you!
  • Unless you're planning on doing something like hypnobirthing, bradley, etc...I prob wouldn't waste the money on it (IMO). I plan on doing one of those next time around so I will be taking classes..but for you I'd just do the hospital tour and do your own research. Hope everything goes well for you, good luck!!

  • I'm in Tucson, and can't really recommend anything to you, but I will say that I personally didn't learn a TON from my classes (some stuff, but not a ton).

However, my husband learned a LOT.  And hearing stuff from a "professional" rather than me seemed to sink in a bit with him, if that makes sense.

It was worth it to me just for that.  But it's totally a personal decision.  And it probably really depends on the class you take too.

The breathing stuff wasn't so valuable to me since I had an epi, but I used some of it before the epi.  And it sold my husband totally on the importance of yoga balls, pregnancy massages, and things like that.  =)

I agree your DH can learn a lot, but I was really open with mine about everything and we talked a lot about birth and labor, so he really didn't get anything out of it either. Really depends on your situation I guess. That breathing didn't work for me at all during my 8.5 hours with no epi. I did my own breathing and got through it. I wish I wouldn't have gotten the damn epi, I was almost done! Damnit, here I go getting all upset about it again lol.

  • Good to know.... *runs off to google breathing exercises for pre-epidural* Yes Thank you!
  • My dh loved the classes!  He'd take them a bunch of times if he could. lol

I think another valuable part is that you meet other people that are about the same pregnant as you, which imo adds to your experience.  I think you can find one for less that $150, though it's been awhile.  GL!

I think ours was $75ish? Maybe it was just our crappy teacher. She never actually answered anyone's questions and was kind of rude, and she was like 90.
