Hey girls!
B and I are leaving this Friday for a trip to San Francisco for his cousin's wedding. We are staying through Monday to get some sightseeing in. I have a book on San Francisco and, of course, we already have our hotel and flight booked. But I was wondering if any of you ladies have been and have recs on things to do/see while we are there. Any must-dos? Especially must-eats, since B and I are foodies!!
TIA!!
Re: San Fran recs. . .
Fisherman's Wharf...it is fun..and have a day to explore Alcatraz (sp??)
Eat in China town! There was/is (I hope) a little restaurant across the street from the China town YMCA and the food there is amazing! 3 course chinese food served to you. It's right beside the basketball courts so I hope it's still there.
Also any place along the piers is pretty good eating for seafood.Fisherman's wharf especially. Bring a sweater it gets cool there all times of year.
It's totally touristy, but you have to go down Lombard Street. I don't care where you're from the hills in San Fran are out of this world.
Definitely ride on a trolleycar.
If you have time visit Alcatraz - totally gives you the creepies!! If not at the very least go to Coit Tower you can see EVERYTHING from there- very cool!
Also the Exploratorium is the a pretty hands on science museum and drive by the transamerica pyramid - the tallest concrete structure in the world (the engineer in me had to add that one) :-)
Have fun! I'm due for a trip back to San Fran! Love that town
Ponder-ing whether or not to become a Viking's fan
A&A had some awesome suggestions. I have never been, so my big help was going to be checking Trip Advisor...love that site.

Layne, you have to eat breakfast at Dottie's True Blue Cafe! The food is to die for. Go early, a line forms around the block, and it's a tiny place. Have fun!
Will you have access to a car?
The Muir Woods are just across the bridge and they are amazing! http://www.nps.gov/muwo/
Also - a quick trip up to Napa to visit a few wineries would be really fun.
We went a few years ago and DH loved Alcatraz but it does book up quick, you often have to reserve in advance.
China Town - I think it was called Sushi Rock (if you like sushi). 3 courses - wish we had it here in Orlando:)
Wine bar - The Nook - It's on Hyde St, and you pass it on the street car going to FW. It's on a corner on the right hand side. They have great happy hour specials!
If you do make it out to wine country there are some awesome fine dining restaurants. We dined at http://www.mustardsgrill.com/ in Napa. We really enjoyed it. We couldn't get into French Laudry, they were all booked up!
For much more casual fare .... Don't forget to try In-n- Out Burger! It's a California staple!
Thanks girls! We are going to try to do everything on foot. We'll be staying at the Omni Hotel in between ChinaTown and the financial district. So we will definitely be exploring ChinaTown and having some dim sum. Also we want to visit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company. How cool is that?!?
We plan on going to the Ferry Building because I've heard they have an amazing farmer's market, cafes and local shops. I had heard about Dottie's True Blue Cafe and we were thinking of stopping by. Glad to hear it is good. When do you recommend going to avoid lines?? What is "early"?
We won't be renting a car. We'd like to do this entire trip walking or using the cable cars. We'll just take a cab to and from the airport and use our feet the rest of the time. We'd love to go to wine country but since it's such a short trip we didn't think we could do it justice. So we'll save that for an entirely separate trip.
Thanks for the recs!! Keep 'em coming!!
Try First Crush. It's a wine bar/restauarant with all local Cali wines. So yum and rather inexpensive!
It's on Cyril Street downtown!
Don't forget the Ghirardelli store!!! Though it's similar to Orlando's, it's just like a must-go.
We also did Alcatraz and really liked it.
Fisherman's Wharf has some good restaurants. And there's one there that is a classic. Ugh - can't think of the name, but it's got subs and good bread. It's in the main area, downstairs on the right. LOL - I'm no help!

Book your Alcatraz trip before you leave. We didn't and it was sold out every day we were there.
Our favorite day was when we booked a trip to the wine country. A van picks you up at your hotel and drives to three wineries with a stop in Sonoma for lunch and Muir Woods in the morning. It wasthe highlight of our trip and we were able to take some great shots of the Golden Gate Bridge looking back on downtown. It was three years ago so I cannot remember who we went with but it wasn't a special company. We just googled wine country tours from San Francisco.
We also did Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, Ghiradelli and Pier 41 (?) We have friends that live out there so they gave us a great tour of the city and helped us hop a trolley car (don't try at Fisherman's Wharf because those are packed and there are lines).
When we go back we are going to rent a car and drive along the Pacific coast highway.
We cheated and never paid for a street car ride; but again, our friends showed us the tricks.
One thing we were told only after landing at the airport. Don't ride in the last car on the BART. Our friends lead an alternative lifestyle and apparently the last car is where anything goes. It was funny because every time we pulled out of a station there would be this huge migration of people out of the last car (I guess they didn't get the warning or they were just trying to catch the BART).
And speaking of favorite guide books. My favorite series is the "Off the Beaten Path" books. We used it in the Keys and were able to see some cool stuff most people totally miss. It had great recommendations for restaurants and I know that was one of your requests.
