Has anyone bought a car stereo lately?

I'm getting so old, I don't even know what to call this! ?

Our Toyota's factory CD/tape/radio thing is on the fritz, and I want to buy a new one for DH for Christmas. ?I found some Sonys for ~$100 at Best Buy, but I don't know if they charge for installation? ?Or if we can install it ourselves?

TIA?

Re: Has anyone bought a car stereo lately?

  • I might not be much help because I bought mine last year at Circuit City, which is no longer in business.  But they had free installation if you bought a stereo over $100.  I would highly recommend letting them install it.  You will probably also have to buy an installation kit for your car model to retrofit the new stereo.  I bought a stereo with a direct plug for my iPod that sits in my glove compartment, instead of having the aux plug on the front of the stereo.
  • I got my new deck a few years ago (and a 12" sub, wooo!) and let them handle all the install.  I also let them handle the install when that deck was stolen and I needed a new one.  Mind you, I also went with a mom and pop audio shop and spent a tad more than $100.

Melmo said it best, you'll likely need an install kit, so it's probably worth it to let the store do the install.

  • Ditto PPs on having it installed. Here are the Best Buy prices: http://www.geeksquad.com/services/car/service.aspx?id=2939

I also remember something where if you spend enough $, they install free. I'd check out in-store offers.

I have a Sony Xplod somethingorother. It works great. No probems and sounds good enough to me.

  • I have the Sony xplod too... it's a great system for being so cheap.  I was prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks but the salesguy recommended the sony one and i'm very happy with it.
  • Oh yea, mines an Alpine.  I highly recommend them.  However, I'm not sure they carry them in the big box stores...

  • I have an Alpine too with a nice screen that shows 3 lines of text so I can search easier. I really like it but it was $$. I also use it with my ipod.
