Amherst, NH - where to give birth??
I live in Amherst (just moved there) and I am slightly closer to Southern NH Medical Center in Nashua but I have an appt in Manchester and if I went with that group I would give birth at Catholic Medical Center. I am not from this area so I have no idea which would be better. I am leaning toward Nashua because I think its about 10 minutes closer but I don't know how painful it will be to switch practices (I am only 14 weeks so it wouldn't be like changing at the very end or anything!)...
Any opinions on either hospital are greatly appreciated!!
Re: Amherst, NH - where to give birth??
Out of those two choices I would definitely recommend SNHMC. They have their own Level III NICU and as the pp said, is a wonderful hospital in general. I also go to Womens Care of Nashua and would highly recommend any one of the practicioners there.
God forbid, but if anything was an issue and you deliver at CMC your baby had to be put in a higher level NICU than they could offer, your baby would be sent to Elliot and you'd be in two different places. That was a big enough factor for me to decide on SNHMC. That said, though, CMC gets many raves here and would not by any means be a bad choice.
Good luck in your decision!
DH and I have a very good friend who delivered her first child at SNHMC and will be delivering her second there as well - BUT she did say to us that if her sister was not a nurse on the maternity floor, she would in no way deliver there - HOWEVER, many women on here have delivered there and loved it.
I delivered at CMC and I cannot cannot cannot say enough great things about my experience there (nor can my DH) - it was awesome - the nurses were fantastic, the doctors from my practice (Bedford Women's Care) were amazing, the suite setting (labor, deliver and recover in the same room - plus you get 3 meals a day for you and your spouse, a daybed for your spouse with trundle, whirlpool bath, mini fridge stocked with beverages - you name it they probably have it) was great...it was nice and quiet there and I couldn't even hear the woman giving birth in the room next to me or the nurses station or anything...I live in South Merrimack - Nashua and Manchester are about the same distance apart - it only took us 15 min. to get to CMC on the highway - but of course it was 4am as well...oh yes and Elliot in Manchester has one of the best rated NICUs in NH (if you were delivering at CMC and there were problems the baby would go there and then you would be transported there too)
If I were you, I would tour each facility and make your own decision...
my sister gave birth at snhmc and raves about them.
i have also heard very good things about cmc too. gl with your choices!!!!
Ditto MrsMagoo and MrsNich. I LOVED CMC! The staff, the rooms, the security, the food, the conveniences that they provide. I would never deliever anywhere else ever if I moved an hour away.
On he flip side I have also had a friend of mine deliever her children at Southern NH and she really liked. Although after I told her all the little extras that CMC had or did for us she said that she wished she knew that! lol Things like 3 meals a day for you and your SO, jacuzzi bathtub, day bed with a trundle bed plus the fact that everything was done in one room from settling me in to the birth until we left I never left my suite and yes its a suite. oh little fridge, which was great since I would wake up at 3 am and thirsty as hell I could grab a cold drink and salad that I saved for dinner or heat up food with a microwave.
Like I said its a lot of little things on top of the big things but all those things made my couple days there so much more easy and for DH too.
HTH!
You definitely cant go wrong with either! We have very happy moms who delivered at both!
I didn't deliver at either (due to DS' heart condition I had to deliver in Lebanon, they don't do hearts at Elliot) but have heard wonderful things about both places.
I did want to clarify one thing though (at least as far as I understand it), Elliot has the only Level III (the highest level, sickest babies) in Southern NH. For most people that doesn't matter & they will never need it, but I just wanted to make sure that was out there. So, at either hospital if your baby was very sick they would probably be transferred to Elliot or Children's.
Good luck!
