Amherst, NH - where to give birth??

I live in Amherst (just moved there) and I am slightly closer to Southern NH Medical Center in Nashua but I have an appt in Manchester and if I went with that group I would give birth at Catholic Medical Center. I am not from this area so I have no idea which would be better. I am leaning toward Nashua because I think its about 10 minutes closer but I don't know how painful it will be to switch practices (I am only 14 weeks so it wouldn't be like changing at the very end or anything!)...

Any opinions on either hospital are greatly appreciated!!

Re: Amherst, NH - where to give birth??

  • Both St. Joseph's and SNHMC in Nashua are very good hospitals. I had my daughter at SNHMC with Women's Care of Nashua and everyone was just wonderful. ?I see Dr. Witt but Dr. Maynard was with me through labor and Dr. Martinez delivered me. ?I cannot rave about them enough and several ladies on here will concur. ?Good luck!

  • Out of those two choices I would definitely recommend SNHMC. They have their own Level III NICU and as the pp said, is a wonderful hospital in general. I also go to Womens Care of Nashua and would highly recommend any one of the practicioners there.

God forbid, but if anything was an issue and you deliver at CMC your baby had to be put in a higher level NICU than they could offer, your baby would be sent to Elliot and you'd be in two different places.  That was a big enough factor for me to decide on SNHMC. That said, though, CMC gets many raves here and would not by any means be a bad choice.

    Good luck in your decision!

  • DH and I have a very good friend who delivered her first child at SNHMC and will be delivering her second there as well - BUT she did say to us that if her sister was not a nurse on the maternity floor, she would in no way deliver there - HOWEVER, many women on here have delivered there and loved it.

I delivered at CMC and I cannot cannot cannot say enough great things about my experience there (nor can my DH) - it was awesome - the nurses were fantastic, the doctors from my practice (Bedford Women's Care) were amazing, the suite setting (labor, deliver and recover in the same room - plus you get 3 meals a day for you and your spouse, a daybed for your spouse with trundle, whirlpool bath, mini fridge stocked with beverages - you name it they probably have it) was great...it was nice and quiet there and I couldn't even hear the woman giving birth in the room next to me or the nurses station or anything...I live in South Merrimack - Nashua and Manchester are about the same distance apart - it only took us 15 min. to get to CMC on the highway - but of course it was 4am as well...oh yes and Elliot in Manchester has one of the best rated NICUs in NH (if you were delivering at CMC and there were problems the baby would go there and then you would be transported there too)

If I were you, I would tour each facility and make your own decision...

  • my sister gave birth at snhmc and raves about them.  =)

i have also heard very good things about cmc too.  gl with your choices!!!!

  • I can only speak for Southern NH Regional Medical Center, as that is my hospital - I stayed there for a week many years ago due to a kidney stone, and I also had my daughter there this past April.  Both experiences were phenomenal.  If you choose to switch practices, I HIGHLY recommend Women's Care of Nashua.  There are three drs there and 1 ARNP.  They are amazing.  Good luck!!
  • I would go no where else but SNHMC and WCN.  Granted i work for the company (selfless plug for my company) but it was my hospital before i worked there and love it.  WCN is one of the best practices in the state and has been awarded for its docs.
  • I live in Merrimack off exit 11 and I delivered at CMC.  It was a wonderful experience.  It is about 10-15 minutes maximum to get there.  The nurses are great and very supporting.  It is SOOO quiet...you would never know you were in a hospital...honestly.  I never heard anyone...no babies...nothing!  The hospital was at maximum capacity also when I delvered.  You should check out their website which gives virtual tour of the rooms.  Good Luck with your decision!

Ditto MrsMagoo and MrsNich.  I LOVED CMC!  The staff, the rooms, the security, the food, the conveniences that they provide.  I would never deliever anywhere else ever if I moved an hour away.

On he flip side I have also had a friend of mine deliever her children at Southern NH and she really liked.  Although after I told her all the little extras that CMC had or did for us she said that she wished she knew that!  lol  Things like 3 meals a day for you and your SO, jacuzzi bathtub,  day bed with a trundle bed plus the fact that everything was done in one room from settling me in to the birth until we left I never left my suite and yes its a suite. oh little fridge, which was great since I would wake up at 3 am and thirsty as hell I could grab a cold drink and salad that I saved for dinner or heat up food with a microwave.

Like I said its a lot of little things on top of the big things but all those things made my couple days there so much more easy and for DH too.

    HTH!

  • Just to let you know ... like CMC, SNHMC provides 3 meals a day for you (only 1, though, for your SO, which kinda sucked but my husband doesn't eat hospital food so it worked out fairly well for him although SNH's food was really good!!) as well as a jacuzzi tub.  Also, unless you have a c-section, everything will be done in your room.  Although the rooms don't have small fridges, what they do have is a great little area that has jello, frozen yogurt, sherbet, milk, juice, and coffee at all times.  They also had little snacks like SmartFood that you could get, all free and easily accessible.  Their housekeeping was fantastic as well as all of their nurses.  I had a completely stress-free stay.  I think it goes without saying that both CMC and SNHMC are wonderful.  I doubt you can go wrong in either place!  Smile

You definitely cant go wrong with either!  We have very happy moms who delivered at both!

  • I delivered at SNHMC- also with Women's Care of Nashua- all fantastic things to say about both. (Trying to get a lot done while Anna is sleeping LOL) We have been MA based, so going to Nashua seemed "normal" from Milford where we live now.  Great experiences with nurses on duty; great on-call group of dr's; very "homey" feel to hospital.  Good luck! You'll be great either way! :)
  • I just have to add, that if you live in Amherst, you are actually probably closer to CMC, since you would quickly pick up 101 to get there, vs, driving down 101A to get to Nashua...
  • I didn't deliver at either (due to DS' heart condition I had to deliver in Lebanon, they don't do hearts at Elliot) but have heard wonderful things about both places.

I did want to clarify one thing though (at least as far as I understand it), Elliot has the only Level III (the highest level, sickest babies) in Southern NH.  For most people that doesn't matter & they will never need it, but I just wanted to make sure that was out there.  So, at either hospital if your baby was very sick they would probably be transferred to Elliot or Children's.

     Good luck!

  • I delivered at CMC as well, with Bedford Women's Care providers, and my experience was wonderful. My son was born VERY ill, and was transferred that night to the NICU at Elliot. The transfer team was great, and CMC even worked it out so I could be transferred to the Elliot Maternity floor to be over there with him. I won't hesitate to deliver at CMC again...I have not one bad word to say about them (or Elliot for that matter!!).
