Plasma vs LCD?

We're in the market for a new TV, and for the size we're considering, it seems like we could get either one of these for a similar price.  We were originally thinking LCD (not LED - that's waaay out of our price range), but for the price, now I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and go plasma.  I've been reading differing reports - it sounds like plasma is on its way out in favor of LED, but plasma has advantages with color & contrast.  We're not big gamers, and we don't have Blu-Ray or anything much fancier than a basic DVD player and a Wii, so we don't really need the top-of-the-line model.

I guess my point is - which would you get?  Or if you have one vs the other, would you switch if you were given the option?  I'm looking for real-world, first-hand experience.

Re: Plasma vs LCD?

  • We have an LCD. We, like you, are not gamers and just watch some TV and movies on it. It does the job for us just fine. For us, it's perfect.

  • We did a ton of research before we bought our tv.  LCD is the way to go!  We love ours so much!  The plasma can burn out if you leave it on to long or play too many video games on it.  And now with almost everything being in HD the picture will still be amazing on your LCD.
  • LCD is very high quality and what we chose. Plasma takes tons of energy and will end up costing you much more on your electricity bill.
  • We went LCD and love it.  I haven't really noticed any issues with the black not being a "true black".  For us, though, the LCD made more sense because of the types of video games H plays and the old burn-in issue with plasma, though they've come far enough with the tech that that's not an issue anymore.

Just remember, they look a LOT bigger at home than in the store!

ITA. I went with LCD myself for this reason.
  • We've got an LCD, but specifically got one that made the blacks look blacker instead of washed out gray that is common in LCDs. I lurve it.
  • We have an LCD, my husband is a big gamer and bought it while he was in the Marine Corps. I would not go with Plasma if I had a choice because it just burns out to eaisly and there is not a way to have it fixed, the whole TV must be replaced! This happened to a co-worker of mine and they had only had the tv about 4 years.

  • I'll be the minority here.

We have a plasma. We got a good deal, and we couldn't pass it up. Overall there's not much difference between the two.

98% of people will not be able to tell the difference in picture. They may say they can, but they can't. (DH is super super super picky about tv settings and colors and blah blah blah like I change a number on accident (sometimes on purpose lol) and he usually notices)

No matter what tv you get google "AVS forums" and find the calibrations for your tv. People spend a ridiculous amount of money to have people come calibrate their TV so the picture looks great. Then usually someone will post the numbers on this website so others can copy.

Yeah, people have horror stories about plasmas, just like some people have horror stories about LCD's.

Just go with whatever is in your budget that makes you happy. But no matter what check out the calibration. Right out of the box the TV will suck. I promise!

  • LCD all the way for a variety of reasons already mentioned. Also because our room gets a lot of sun and so plasma would not have been as good.
  • LCD.

It will also last longer than Plasma
