I am recently married and in the process of my name change. I need to get a new SS card. However, they are open M-F 9-4 and that doesnt mesh with my work schedule. I heard that some people haev mailed it in, however, when I called they said I had to also mail orginial proof of identity with my application. I am not comfortable mailing my license or passport? Has any one else done this? Thank you in advance for the input
Re: Name Change - SS
I was not aware of the mail option, but would not feel comfortable mailing the application. Can you take a 1/2 day or day off to go there. I ended up waiting for several months to change my name because I needed to find time to go to the SS office.
I took off part of a day to go do this. The downtown office officially opened at 9, but the waiting area opened before then. Not sure exactly what time the waiting room opens, but I got there at like 8:50 and there were already a few people waiting. Good thing is you can get a ticket as soon as you get there. Because I got a ticket for the line before 9, I was in and out pretty quick (like 30 minutes total maybe?).
The other thing you can do is call and schedule an appointment. That should help expedite the amount of time you're actually there.
HTH!
