Gift for Staying with Extended Family over the Holidays

We live in IL and are going TX for about a week over Thanksgiving.  We are staying with my DH's aunt and uncle.  What would be appropriate for us to bring as a "thank you" for them hosting Thanksgiving and having us?

Re: Gift for Staying with Extended Family over the Holidays

  • I think something edible would be nice.  Some chocolate covered pecans or some other type of sweet.

  • If you're staying for a week? I'd bring the sweets, like the pp said; and then afterward I'd send them a really nice gift cert for dinner out, something like that .

  • I agree about giving something edible. You could put together your own fun gift basket. If they are wine people you could give them a bottle of a really good wine and some cheese/crackers to go with. Or you could do something dessert-ish.
  • I agree with something edible. Maybe something from your hometown that you enjoy.
  • I don't know what your budget is, but I love sending an Edible Arrangement.  You can have it delivered after you leave, or while you are there.  You can easily order online.  They also do wonderful chocolate covered strawberries.
  • Another option is to find local favorites from where you are coming from to share. For example, there is an awesome soap shop nearby that I love. I like giving a set of the soaps, particularly selected in scents they would like.  Also, a bottle of wine, if they are drinkers, isn't remiss - if they aren't drinkers, or you don't know - pass on the wine or they will end up passing it to someone else (happens all the time with my parents who don't drink!).

While I don't always say edible, I always say consummable - soaps, lotions, food, candles, things that can be used over time!

  • I agree with PP.  I love to bring local edibles as gifts when I stay with people.  We have a great local chocolate shop here so I usually take Buckeye's or other local candies from there.  You could do the same with wine and bring a bottle from a local winery.  DH and I love to go to wineries so we try to gift bottles from the places we've visited.  It just makes giving a bottle of wine a little more special.
