Green tomatoes

I have a bunch of tomatoes that are just not turning red.  Can I do anything with the green tomatoes?

Re: Green tomatoes

  • I like to fry them!  You could also make salsa, relish, chutney, throw them into a soup or stew.  There are plenty of things to do with green tomatoes!  Have fun!
  • I vote for battering and frying them. They are delicious.

  • Also, have you tried the brown paper bag trick to get them to turn?

  • What's the brown paper bag trick?

Also, a recipe for frying them?

  • Use them in place of apples in a pie - put sugar cinamon and lemon juice in a crust and cove with crust and bake.  To fry them - slice and use an egg mixture then dip in cornmeal, salt, pepper, anyother seasonings (paprika, garlic, sugar, etc).  brown paper bag? Seriously just put them in a brown paperbag near a window or at room temp.  If they're that green though, they won't turn red.  Any redness to them they will.  yummy in salsa too or if therer are too many - mulch for next year
  • I've got a recipe for green tomato & apple chutney in my blog.  it's really good with pork or chicken or even a cheese platter.
  • Put them in a brown paper bag and fold the top closed then stick the bag in a dark cabinet for a few days. It should turn them.

Fried green tomatos are easy. Slice them up, dunk in milk/egg mixture, coat with cornmeal and fry in your choice of oil/grease/crisco.
