Re: charitable ideas
Every year we take our bonus checks to give a birthday present to Jesus.
We give half of it to the animal shelter where we got our kitties. We take half of that and buy items they need and give the other half as a check.
The other half of our bonus goes to another charity that we pick. Last year it was St Jude. This year it will be World Vision.
We enjoy shopping for local 'giving tree' recipients, and often make it a point to select the older kids that are harder to shop for. We give to the food drives and some years help with the sorting. It is a lot of work and a lot of fun.
We also shop for gift boxes that go to kids in other countries... something done through church.
We like to donate to causes as 'gifts' to our grandsons, and give them an ornament that relates to the cause so that when they are old enough, they will learn what it means. One year is was this donation to Bear Hugs, another year it was to a literacy related cause and last year it was animal related. I haven't decided this year's 'gift' yet.
I 'give' similarly to my siblings (one has everything, one wants us to donate instead of gifts), and my mom... usually health related for my mom and brother, since that is their professional field, and for my sister it is usually something related to teaching or literacy, since she is a school librarian. I like to buy fair trade items from the greater good site, since the money does good in more ways than one.
For Christmas my grandma, all of my mom's sisters, and I give donations in each other's names to the Heifer Foundation. It's a great organization, and means a lot to us, because before my grandfather passed away we donated to Heifer in his name as well. So it feel like a reminder, or in honor of him as well.
Last year, my husband and I bought food, toys and treats for the shelter that we got our dog from, and we will do that this year as well.
This year, we are also giving a big wish-list item to a new local non-profit theater that we both work for. We're excited because it's a surprise.
We do the angel tree thing as well and some of the toy drives for needy kids.
I also give to charitable orgs that I have volunteered for and larger ones, like the Nature Conservatory, at this time of year.
Angel Tree--either at a local store or restaurant. I noticed this year that JC Penney has an Angel Tree online on their website.

Also my church as a lot of charity opportunities. There is a coat drive for homeless people. And my church community group is going to buy a crib and mattress for a young couple in need who is about to have a baby boy this month.
