I've grown up with Gator sports. All my life. But in the spring, we're moving far, far away from the heart of the Gator Nation. And I won't be able to go to games anymore. I might make one football game a year, if I'm lucky. Gator sports have played such a huge role in my life. It's a huge part of our social lives and something that brings all of my friends and family together. Family can come visit us, but the Gators won't have road games where we're moving.
Last night at the game, I kind of got choked up when we sang the Alma Mater b/c I realized I've got 3, maybe 4 more game to go to this season. It seems silly, but it's really making me sad. It's probably my biggest issue with moving away. Anyone else feel this way? Or am I the only one who's overly emotional about sports?
Re: getting sentimental about sports
I kind of know how you feel. I'm lucky enough, though, to still be in Big 10 country, so I can sometimes catch games here, and we usually go back for 1 Hawkeye fball and one bball game each year.
I was in the marching band at Iowa, and let me tell you...that last time we sang our Alma Mater, I was an absolute mess. It's tough, and strange to feel so emotionally connected to it. But it's like you said, it brings all your friends and family together. It's hard to leave something like that behind.
I hear you. The thing that prevents me from REALLY wanting to leave Florida is the fact that we currently have a 1.5 hr drive to Gainesville.
Go Gators!
Well, at least by making it to one a year, you still go to more than most!
We try to make it to two ND games a year, but now that we are in grad school its great that we can go to every game.
Also, PP made me think of something. Where ever it is you go, look up the Alumni Association in the area to see if there is a fun place to go watch Gator Games.
Here in Mpls, we went to the Gators Alumni place when the Iowa one was too packed. They had their own room in the restaurant with a DJ playing the fight song, the AA giving away prizes, etc. It was a lot of fun, even if I don't like the Gators much after the last Outback Bowl
.
My husband and I attended the Outback Bowl v. Iowa. Y'all have some of the nicest fans we've ever come across.
Awww, thanks!
I was at the game, too (both of them, 2004 and 2006) in the marching band. We had so much fun!!
You need to find your local Gator club. I'm sure there are some on yahoo's meetup pages. No it isn't the same as going to the game but it is a way to watch the games with other fans and make new friends in the area you are moving to.
Good luck with your move!
I'm only five hours from Gainesville, but it's so hard to make it to games that when I do make it to a game, I cry during the pre-game band stuff. I cried at SEC Fanfare last year during the band stuff since I knew I wasn't going to be able to afford a ticket to the game and I was so close to the Dome. And DH does not understand how pissed off I am when I say I want to go to one of my games and rather than being sympathetic, he complains about wanting to go to one of his when it's been longer since I've been to a game than him.
I know we'll end up back in the south again some day. I can't stay away forever. DH just wants to come back south, I want to end up here again.
And we'll definitely be involved with the Gator Club. We're going to Chicago, and the Windy City Gator Club is one of the best (and biggest) in the nation. They actually won that distinction last year. I can't wait to get involved with them. But it still won't be the same as tailgating on campus and going to the games. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I know I'll cry at our last game of the season. It'll be my senior day too.
You'll be in good company, at least.
Cinnabun and Junebug say, "Go Wildcats!"
I grew up in Minnesota and Gopher Hockey was my life - and even now when I see them play here in Denver or Springs I get choked up seeing them - and going home to watch them play I get really emotional over.
Then I lived in Oakland for 5 years and was already an A's fan before moving there. I had season tix for 4 years and even now I get choked up watching them, or hearing certain cheers etc.
