Need help to get rid of virus

I have a laptop that is constantly non-responsive. It doesn't completly crash, but very often IE stops responding. It's under warranty, so I took it to Best Buy. According to them, it's infected.

I had been using the free version of AVG and decided to go ahead and buy webroot virus software. After running it, there were 7 "spy" cookies that I've quarantined.

Anyone have advice on what I should do from here? It doesn't seem to have resolved.

  • I've never heard of Webroot.

That being said, get your files off it on to an external hard drive ASAP and then reinstall everything. Oh, and I'd double check that Webroot is reputable. I'm a big fan of CA Security (free through my Internet provider) or MacAfee, but not of Norton.

  • I agree with PP.

Move all of your important files to another place - your pictures, music, movies, documents, etc.  Then if you still have your Windows install disc (assuming you have Windows) just erase everything and do a clean install of Windows.  You'll be starting from scratch, and will have to reinstall any programs you use, but you'll be starting out 100% virus free if you do this.

  • Like everyone else said back up and re-install windows. It's the easiest thing to do.

Or you can run whatever virus checker you have and see if it finds anything. Google what it finds and you should be able to find somewhere that tells you how to get rid of it. But re-installing windows is the easiest and best way to do it.

This is the microsoft virus software. It's free, it automatically downloads new versions, we've used it for years (it used to be called "one care" and you had to buy it) It's awesome. It's not perfect but what is.

    :) Good luck!!!

  • You can backdate your computer through a System Restore.  I did this with my cousins recently who had a virus I could not get rid of.  My DH is a programmer and told me to do this.  Do you know when the virus started?  If so you only have to back up the documents/files you have created since then.  Just google System Restore and whatever operating system you have and it will walk you through it.  :)
  • Thanks ladies!

I should have said I backed everything up before I sent it in for repair, so I'm good there.

I bought webroot at Best Buy, so I can only assume it's a reputable program.

Guess I'll go through and start the re-install of windows. I was hoping there might be some other option.

I guess I was somewhat skeptical to believe that it's a virus, because I have always had up to date virus software and I don't have "dangerous" internet habits. Also, the only reason I have to even think it is a virus is that Best Buy told me it was and they wanted $130 to get rid of it. They didn't tell me what virus it is, but now I think I'll call them and ask if they have a record of it.

  • I know I'm late to the game, but go to Google and download Malwarebytes. I had a virus that somehow got through both McAfee and AVG, Malwarebytes found it, quarantined it, and deleted it...and about 125 other found issues.

    Oh, and it's free.

Ditto.  Malwarebytes fixed mine when I couldn't get anything else to.
