Non-Mac Laptop Recs

Well, my H's laptop is quite literally falling apart.  The casing has cracked near one of the screen hinges and the screen keeps falling back.

POS Acer.

He doesn't want a Mac (that's what I'll be getting with my Dell bites it) so I'm looking for some recommendations or suggestions for other options.

He does game a bit, but nothing graphics intensive (online go attack that guy with x number of troops typing it into a text box time gaming), mostly just day to day internet browsing and document management.

Weight isn't too much an an issue, because it's mostly at-home use.

I don't think he'd go for a netbook, he'd rather a full size screen.

Under $1000 would be best.

Any suggestions?

Re: Non-Mac Laptop Recs

  • I LOVE my HP Pavilion. I have had this one almost 3 years I think, either 2 or 3 years. It was less than $600, has a good size screen & is really light weight. I am rough on computers so this one has lasted me the longest. And since I got this one the have upgraded a lot. I want a new one so bad just for the upgrades.
  • I PPH my Asus laptop, but I don't know that you'll be able to find an Asus for under $1000.  My other suggestion would be a Dell.  I have a work Dell XT and I like it OK (although I don't use it for gaming).

If you didn't say this, I'd say check out Alienware. Super sweet gaming laptops. Heck, just awesome looking systems no matter where you look. But, since the price is an issue, I'd check out Dell. I've had awesome support with them back when my Inspiron 8200 wasn't a door stop (high school), especially with the best warranty plan they have. Totally worth the extra money.

  • I have an Acer that I absolutely love. The little lovey is just over three years old and the only broken thing on it is that one of the footpads has gone missing. Mine's a 3680. Got it for either six or eight hundred dollars.

  • Thanks guys, we'll keep your suggestions in mind, however, I think we will be avoiding the Acer this time around.

  • Sony.

I don't know the Asus laptops very well since they are still sort of new, but they seem to be good gaming laptops.

And if price was not an issue I wou;d suggest Alienware
