To decorate or not?

I'm trying to decide if I should bother decorating for Christmas this year.

This year, we'll be spending Christmas in Spokane with family so we'll be gone from the 23rd-27th.. and we're spending NYE with some friends at THEIR house.  We also rarely have people come to our house (it's easier to go to friends houses as they have kids and kid friendly homes.. ) so I'm beginning to wonder if it would be all that bad if I just didn't bother?  I'm the one that ends up having to put up the tree and take it down, as DH just isn't that into it.. and given that I'll be even MORE pregnant come decorating and undecorating time.. I'm leaning towards no..

What do you guys think? should I bother?

Re: To decorate or not?

  • I would decorate, but I'm sort of a Christmas freak.  I'm one of those people who starts singing Christmas songs in July.  And pretty much from July on, I beg Jeff once a month to put up the Christmas tree and lights.  Big Smile

But if it doesn't bother you or DH to not have the pretties up, and you decide it's not worth it I won't be mad!  Wink

  • We had a similar situation as you last year and we decided not to decorate as well. I didn't really miss it as we were visiting family over Xmas and they had decorations up. This year we'll get a tree though.
  • Christmas is my favorite holiday so I usually decorate.  However, there was one year where my sister lived with us (our house is really small) that I didn't.  It was too much of a hassle to try and move furniture around to fit everything so we didn't bother.

I say since you won't be home most of the time, don't decorate.  Plus, think of this:  No clean up!

Its my favorite holiday too.. but I'm the one that always has to decorate and take things down... so the "no clean up" prospect sounds devine :D

  • I'm 99% sure we'll get the condo we want (yay!), which means I think it will be too small for a tree. :( We didn't have a tree last year either. Instead, I will decorate a bit around the house, perhaps hang a fresh wreath so at least it smells like a tree, etc....I think a little decorating is better than none!

Last year I got some fresh greens for free at a tree lot, and made a pretty centerpiece for our kitchen table using some ornamnents. New condo is also too small for a kitchen table though...(we never used it anyways, except to set stuff on!)

  • Yay for the condo!! If you need any house stuff, let me know... We've got random house stuff laying around that it unused in the garage :)

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies!  I think I've decided I'll put up some lights around the front window and hang up the wreath on the front door and some candles around the house.  I just don't have the energy to put the entire tree together this year, especially if we wont be here!! :)  Last year I went ALL OUT and put lights and decor EVERYWHERE... and I had to take them back down too... so we had lights up until the middle of February ;)

  • I was going to agree with the majority! I too, am a Christmas freak and my little one is turning 2 the 28th of this month so I think she'll appriciate the decorations and things more this year. Even though you won't be home for most of the holidays, when are home, the smell of a wreath, or a tree scented candle (yankee candles and Bath and Body Works make some) and some lights will def. make you feel festive when you are home! Another idea that I use...measure out the back of your front door and get a big peice of red or green butcher paper at the local craft store. Tape up any Christmas cards you get to enjoy! Or, hang string up over your mantel and string up the cards. Reminds you of all the people we are thankful for throughout the year!
