Ahh stupid electric bill

I hate summers for this reason. My bill was $125 in April $175 in May and now $200 today. I even tried cutting alot. What do you pay? My house is about 1500 Sq FT

Re: Ahh stupid electric bill

  • hAve geek come To Your house and Wave Her knee socks That will hlep cool it Down!!

  • We had the same problem. It seemed like they just kept getting higher and higher during the summer, so i set us up for a budget friendly plan. I forget what its called but they average out your last 6 month bills and your monthly bill is then the same each month. Every so many months they readjust. When we first started I paid 149 each month. It just recently went down to 139. I like it because I am not surprised by a high bill one month.
  • I was going to say the same thing - we decided to go with a levelized billing plan a few months ago.  It helps you to budget for it better - you pay higher bills in the winter but don't get slammed in the summer.  We have a smaller house than you do, but our bill averages right around $100 a month.

Do you have OUC?  I love to do that!

Our house is about 2800 sqft and we paying $216 this month.  We got a programmable thermostat and we make sure it goes up to 78 during the day.  When we aren't sleeping its about 76. While we are sleeping its about 74.  Is your house 2 story?  We ended up putting a door up near our bonus room to cut down electricity as well.

     We have Progress Energy.

  • Our last bill was $130-something. We have a 2000 sq. ft house. We also have the programmable thermostat and keep the air at 79 degrees during most hours of the day (I get cold easily Smile) and 75 degrees from 10 pm - 7 am.

  • My bill is in the low $200's for a 1500 sq ft house because he thinks he lives in an igloo! The temp at night is 67!!!!!! Indifferent

We have progress energy too. I'm going to look into setting up the budget friendly plan. Sounds great!

Our bill has increased also b/c they approved for the electric companies to charge customers more b/c of the price of gas! Sad

  • p.s he= the hubby...lol
  • I'm not sure if energy costs vary from apartment to houses but here goes. . .

We have a 1350 sq ft apartment.   My water and electric come on separate bills (which is different than where I moved from where all the utilities came on one bill).  My electric only bill is from Progress Energy and has ranged from $90 to $100-ish for the last couple (hot) months.  I would like to be able to reign in our energy usage, but our thermostat is awful.  It's not digital and the analog lever we use to "dial" our temp is huge and there is about 2 mm between 75 and 80 degrees.  So as you can imagine it's pretty difficult to be specific with the temp in the house.  I can't wait to move into a house and get a digital thermostat that we can program.

  • our townhome is about 1,500 sq feet and we pay around $90-100 each month. I'm so scared to see last months bill--with the new hike in price I know I'm going to be in trouble! We have a digital thermostat as well and I have it set to 80 during the day and 77 by 4pm (once we get home), and 76 from 10-7am. I've heard if you turn off your AC altogether during the day that it's suppose to help, and it shouldn't take too long to cool down your house. Also make sure your closing all your blinds during the day.

  • We have a  digital thermostat. And I keep it at 79 all the time. IThe house is only one story, but We have vaulted ceilings in the entire house which I think is the problem. Also the house is 19 years old, so the windows maybe contributing. I really wish KUA did that  average charge thing. I would love that.
  • We also changed to the new light bulbs which does help a lot.
  • Ours is pretty bad. We have vaulted ceilings and in the summer even though we also have gas, our electric runs us 250 for AC set at 79.
  • I know I'm a little late to this, but oh well Smile

Changing out your light bulbs will help, but I doubt you'll see a huge difference right away. Most utility companies recommend 80-82 when you aren't home and no lower than 78 when you are. That whole 78 thing doesn't work for JD and I since we are both REALLY hot when we sleep (sounds kinds dirty...) so we leave it at 80 until we go to bed and then adjust it to 76. We also have ceiling fans in all the rooms, so if it starts feeling hot with the air at 80 in the middle of the day, we just turn on the fan. They use tiny bits of energy.

You can also have someone come to your house and check your ducts and windows to see if they are leaking. I'd definitely do that with a 19 year old house. The cost to have things replaced might be high up front, but it will help with the bill, as well as being a bonus when you go to sell.

    Sorry that's so long!!

  • Oh, and we have a 1900 square foot townhome and the highest our bill has been so far is $130. Granted, it is brand new so I know all the new appliances, etc. really help.
