Tell me about Dover

We saw a house that had potential there, now I have to convince DH that it's a good place to live. What do you love about it?

Re: Tell me about Dover

  • I grew up there and my parents still live there... I love the city... the only reason we didn't buy there is because DH didn't want to be too close to my parents.  :)  It has plenty to offer, school district is great, downtown seems to be growing quite a bit... :) I'm sure many will tell you positive things about it.  I also work in the city :)
  • DH and I lived there a couple years. We lived on Broadway at first. That area is a little sketchy though. But we liked being able to walk downtown. I really like the downtown area and how close it is to the beach. We really miss living on the coast.
  • As you know, I am a big Dover fan!  MH and I have lived here for 2 1/2 years and I think when we sell/buy (again!) we will stay in Dover.  The schools are great, plenty of town services, all the stores you need, close to Portsmouth and Kittery.  Plus there is a great downtown with good restaurants and shops.  Local markets selling local produce and meats.  You can live in town or sort of in the country.  You can get a nice house for under $250K but your taxes might be a little high.  Maybe it's my neighborhood that makes me like Dover so much; everyone knows each other and has lived here a long time.  They made us feel very welcome, and it's definitely the type of place where I'd go next door to as for a cup of sugar!  Where is the house?  There are some areas I would stay away from, no matter how nice the house is.  Location is something you can't change!
  • we loved living in dover for the six years we spent there.  We started there in college and stayed for a few years after.  The shopping was always good, the food was tasty and the grocery store was close.  But alas I am a country girl at heart and moved when we had the chance.
  • I loved living in Dover.  We would have stayed definitely but it was far from our jobs, our families and even farther from most of our friends.  I hated being so "far" from everyone all the time, but loved the area and could have gotten so much more for our $$$ if we stayed there.  I say go for it!

  • I love Dover.  I've lived there for 4 years now, DH for one.  It's a beautiful city with lots to offer.  Even the "bad" parts aren't too bad compared to other cities.  Unfortunately we'll be moving away in the near future because DH commutes 50 miles each way for work, and I commute 60 miles, so it's not working for us with gas prices.  I would definitely recommend moving there if you can.
  • Another fan of Dover here.  I grew up in Dover as well.... but I don't mind living near my mom and my IL's.  We all live within a mile of each other.  Smile

I love being able to walk into town and as Michelle said there are many spots were you can be close to town, but also close to more rural areas.  We actually looked at one house that had a farm at the end of the street but also was only a mile from downtown.  Love it.

The Portsmouth Children's Museum moved to Dover and is opening later this month as the Children's Museum of NH, so there will be loads of great opportunities for kids in Dover.  There are new restaurants and shops opening all the time.  The schools are great, lots of wonderful teachers.

Like any town it does have its challenges or things that people complain about, but over all I think its a wonderful place to live.
