40th Surprise Party - Not over the Hill
My BIL and I are trying to put together a 40th surprise party for my sister. She is a little touchy about her birthdays and doesn't usually celebrate them, but this year she has expressed wanting to celebrate.
We are trying to think of fun ideas for a theme etc, that is NOT "over the hill" but that would incorporate fun food and theme with minimal decorations.
Besides, a Luau or Life is a Beach theme, does anyone have any ideas?

I like the cocktail party suggestion. That'd be cute!
If you're considering daytime, you could do a nice luncheon or brunch - make it garden theme with potted plants and/or supermarket flowers. Decor could be simple. Just keep everything white except for the flowers.
If you're considering something less low key, how about a "40 Fiesta" with a taco bar, margaritas and pinata? Pick a couple of bright colors like yellow and red for cups and plates and you're all set and you won't need much decor. Just put your efforts into making a nice display for the food and drinks.
