What's everyone's plans for Thanksgiving?

I hope this gets the board moving...

This year is going to be my first Thanksgiving as a married woman!  Thanksgiving is my father's favorite holiday and in turn has become one of my favorite holidays.  My husband and I live in an apartment and I would love to host a Thanksgiving dinner for my whole family, but my place is too small to fit all 20 of us.  I was thinking of doing a small dinner for my husband and I and then going to my parents house to eat again lol.  I hope that next year I can host a big Thanksgiving dinner for the whole family in house, anyhow what are you ladies planning on doing on Turkey day?  Do you have any special recipes you'd like to share? I am going to attempt to make a pumpkin pie from scracth...we will see how that goes... =)

Re: What's everyone's plans for Thanksgiving?

  • No set plans yet, but I'm pretty sure it will follow last yr's routine - dinner w/ my parents at their house, then to DH's aunt's house for dinner w/ his family.

I hosted Thanksgiving one yr, and it was great... except I was dead tired for Black Friday!  LOL

My Thanksgiving specialties are Pecan Pie and Sweet Potato Casserole.  I bake them both (casserole for my parents - and pecan pie for both houses) for Thanksgivng.

  • We're spending Thanksgiving chilling at our house cooking most of the day. My brother and SIL want us to come over for Thanksgiving, but frankly I don't want to be stuck in their cramped apartment and deal with my hyper brother. We just want to relish having a day off because we both go back to work on Friday and then DH leaves for California that same weekend.

  • My mom does it every year at her house. My in-laws and my older brother's in-laws join us too! Its one big fat Cuban Sangiving lol. Im actually greatful that they all get along. We are each bringing a dish. I am in charge of the candied yams. Yummm! I may make a pecan pie too. I found a great recipe online.

  • Ah! I am so excited for Thanksgiving! My mom is hosting it this year (we are doing Christmas) and I can hardly wait. My earliest memories of Thanksgiving are in my mom's kitchen, spending the whole day baking and cooking and waiting for the family to arrive. We always make sangria and all the women sit around and talk, drink and laugh.

I was a little bummed last week because my in-laws and my family always do Thanksgiving together, but since my BIL has a girlfriend he's been together with for a while, they were going to go up to Ft. Lauderdale to spend Thanksgiving with them and meet her family. I adore her and I was happy for them, but the selfish part of me was really sad that I wasn't going to have my whole family together for Thanksgiving.

Buuuuttt my BIL's girlfriend's sister is eight and a half months pregnant and so her parents are going to stay with her for Thanksgiving. So their plans got cancelled. And now everyone is coming to my mom's! Happy day! I got my wish :)

I'm making parmesan garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, citrus glazed cinnamon carrots and the most kick ass caramel pumpkin cheesecake ever. I have my recipes at home, but I'll share when I get to them :)

Eli...Carmel Pimpkin Cheese Cake sounds delish!!!! Maybe I could give this a whirl instead of pumpkin pie...

I really meed to bake more...hmmm I am thinking maybe I could make some holiday cookies this year...

  • We're going over my husband's cousins house. We go there every single weekend just to hang out anyways, only difference is there will be turkey lol

So excited, Some menu items me and my mil will be making:

    Banana Nut Bread
    Cornbread (with and without jalepenos)
dh's special cranberry sauce, this is his contribution to the meal. He does it every year
and my favorite....pumpkin cheescake mmmmmmmmmm. yuuuum!!!

  • We're going to Mexico!!!  (Cue the mariachi music)

We booked the trip with another couple, it's going to be the first time we travel with friends so I'm interested to see how this goes. DH and I usually travel just the two of us or do vacations visiting family, we've never gone away with another couple before.

In regards to recipies, if you love mashed potatoes, I highly recommend the recipe from Pioneer Woman. They are amazing! Let me put it this way, her recipe includes cream cheese...enough said.

  • Johana...I love love jalepenos...between you and Eli I am now convinced on doing  a pumpkin cheese cake... =)

Ceventa... Have fun in Mexico!!!! Drink several maragaritas for us!!!! =)

Pumpkin cheesecake is soooo much better than regular pumpkin pie. Don't have my recipe with me, but here's one i saw on pioneer womans website that looked sooo good.

  • And to any pumpkin cheesecake - just buy Smucker's caramel sauce and swirl it around in the prepared pan before you cook it and it is even more heavenly!

yeah, think I will make this addition this year. mmmm

I so love thanksgiving, the food, and all the family together drinking and having fun. soo excited!

  • I'm a little sad about this years Sangiving (we call it that too at our house, Jenny! lol).

My entire family, along with DH's entire family, is going to be out of town. No exaggeration.  Not a sibling (when I am one of 5 and he is one of 3), not a parent, nada!

We usually have a big get together at one of my brothers houses but since everyone is going to be gone, we have nowhere to go!  Even our close friends aren't able to do stuff this year.

I am going to cook our own mini Thanksgiving for just the two of us.  This will probably be the only time we will celebrate a holiday alone.  I'm making a turkey, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, this delicious cranberry walnut jello, cornbread, some type of pumpkin or apple dessert, and who knows what else.  I am going to have leftovers for days!  I am actually thinking of inviting friends over for leftovers on Friday night. :)

P.S. I love some of the Pioneer Woman's recipes, but the amount of pictures drive me insane!  Do we need that many pics to show how to mash potatoes?!

LOL! I know what you mean, but I actually really like the photos. I'm always afraid that while I'm making a recipie it's not "turning out right". With the pictures, I know exactly what it's supposed to look like. Sometimes I even make notes in the margins of the recipie like "it should be a caramel color here"...I'm such a nerd. Geeked

    Amen to the margaritas!! LOL!

lol I do the exact same thing. I love all the pictures, it really does help.

  • DH and I are heading to his folks house for Thanksgiving. I'm bringing a Cajun rice dressing, sweet peas, pumpkin pie, and ice cream.  Will be nice to get away for a few days. We start packing for the Orlando move when we get back. Indifferent

  • I'm looking forward to it! We'll be in Jacksonville with my mom, stepdad, and his family. We did this for the first time last year (it was our first year in Florida), and it was great.

All the menu plans sound delicious!

  • We are going to my IL's....nothing to exciting, just the 5 of us just like every weekend. Not sure what I'm making, I think the green bean casserole and maybe a pie. I'm thinking my peanut butter and banana cup pie...Fat Free but VERY good.

Everyone's menu's do sound very good.

  • Ahhh....I love the holidays! I have cooked DH Thanksgiving for the past few years. We normally stay in FL and then travel up north to visit our families for Christmas. With the baby due in a few weeks, I am going to scale down my Thanksgiving menu this year.

Who doesn't love the smell of a roasting turkey while watching the parades?! One of my fave dishes is a baked macaroni and cheese casserole topped with goat cheese crumbles. Yum.

I do envy of all of you who get to share the holiday with family. :)
