Hello ladies! DH and I were married about 6 months ago, and we currently live in CA. We both know that we don't want to stay here, and Oregon is a place we are both really interested in, so we are planning a trip to Portland for June 2010. I am curious about hotels... we would like to stay downtown, so any suggestions you could make would be wonderful. TIA!
Re: Just visiting!
Wow, I love your dress! Your smile really is sunshiny
As far as moving here, our economy is pretty crappy-we're worse off that the rest of the country for several reasons. I;ve heard its like that in CA too?
Either way, I would definitely say have secure jobs first if you do decide to move, but I wonder if you might find better/more opportunities elsewhere? Sorry, I know that's not the most encouraging advice
aw, thanks for the compliments.
We aren't planning on moving up there anytime in the near future... the move would be probably at least 2 years into the future. Hopefully the economy will turn around a little by then. We are both still students, and are going into the healthcare field, so hopefully that will help increase job opportunities.
Either way, we would still like to come and visit so we know if we even really like it there or not, lol. so our trip is set for June, any hotel recs?
The Nines is pretty fabulous! I think they've been running some promotions lately, as they can be a little pricey at times. SO worth it though. On top of the Nines is the yummiest restaurant ever, and they have an awesome HH too. Pricey for dinner, but the atmosphere is very romantic. The restaurant is called Urban Farmer-I went there once with a client and loved it.
Plus, its a good location too-lots of stuff nearby.
I agree on the dress...GORGEOUS!!
June is BY FAR the best time to visit Portland. Honestly, a lot of people visit in the summer and then move here...and our winters suck. So please please please visit in November/December before you actually make the decision to move here! For your own sanity!
As for hotels... downtown there's a Marriott (right on the water, nice views), Hilton, etc so if you are trying to get membership miles or anything... The Avalon is nice, but far away...do you know if you are getting a rental car? What kinds of activities are you wanting to do while you're in Portland?
The Heathman and Benson are very nice. The Nines is the nicest hotel in Portland (in my opinion) and it's right in the middle of a great shopping area! Tax free shopping!
Uuuuuum jinx!!!
I would recommend the Hotel Monaco or Vintage Plaza, they both have complimentary happy hours from 5-7pm each night. And great rooms, too.
The Benson and the Heathman are gorgeous historical hotels, if that is your style.
The Nines seems cool, but do the rooms look a little sterile to anyone else? The place just feel frigid to me for some reason.
Thanks for the advice ladies! We want to do the fun stuff, like see the gardens and the zoo and the museums, but we also want to check out neighborhoods and stuff... try to get a feel for what it would be like to actually live there.
We are actually pretty excited about the winters, believe it or not. lol We live in southern california, and even though its almost the middle of November, it almost hit 100 degrees today. ugh.
I think we might actually make the drive up there ourselves. We have thought about making it a little road trip, so we would have our car with us.
Thanks so much for the generous offer, i will definitely take you up on that!
Hotel Lucia is my favorite hotel in town. It's right downtown, is boutiquey, has great Thai food for room service and a pillow menu. www.hotellucia.com
I have several friends from southern CA that moved to OR only to move back to CA because they couldn't handle the gray. People talk a lot about the rain in OR, and we get a lot of it, but what really gets to people is the gray, not the rain. We see little sunshine from about October/November to June. Sure, we'll have a freak day here or there (maybe even a few days) but most people, even those who have lived here for years, get to a point where they just want to see some sun.
So, please come visit in June. It may be rainy as we don't really kick into full summer mode until July but it's still a nice time of year to visit. But if you decide that you want to move here, make a point to come back in the winter so you can get a feel for what 6+ months of your year will feel like.
Well...speaking from experience...I am one of "those" evil Californians who moved to Oregon! (Moved here from San Diego a few weeks ago).
I LOVE It hear! Ironically, we were planning to probably move here next summer, and started doing alot of homework this past summer on where to work, and where DH could go to school, etc. We were planning a trip over Thanksgiving to really check it out. Well....got a job sooner than expected, and moved up on a whim. So, it IS possible if you work hard and look in the right places.
Both DH and I have lived places where it does get more seasons/rain and gray (we both are from N.Ca, both lived in Germany-simliar weather to hear- and DH lived in Seattle for a few years.) SO...we are prepared for the gray and wet weather.
I will say this: People in Oregon are SO nice..so much nicer (in general) than CA...yes, I know there are exceptions to both places, but that's been my experience so far. It's gorgeous, even in the rain (but I'm a cold weather, non-southern CA environment kind of person).
If you have any questions, don't hesistate to page me!

Thank you so much for the advice, and all of the friendly offers. We definitely want to come back in the winter, but school wise, june just works best for us right now.
Thanks SD... I have heard the people are a lot different from down here, and we are really looking forward to that. lol
I am going to look into all of those hotels right now... and I am even more excited than before for our trip!
