Mine is dying a quick death and with my 35th bday just around the bend, J has decided he wants to get me a new camera. But I don't know which one to ask for...
Criteria:
1) Compact...easy to throw into my purse.
2) 12 MP or higher
3) Digital Zoom 3X or higher and good macro setting
4) Good battery life (preferably rechargable lithium battery)
Personally, I'd love to get a DSLR, but we agreed that we want something compact and relatively easy to use (since J will be home with Libby most days, he wants to be sure he feels comfortable using the camera too).
I am not brand-loyal...but I have been looking at Canon's. My mom has a Fuji that she likes. And I know Sony's are well liked too. So recommend yours...and help me decide!
Re: Recommend your digital point and shoot
I have this Canon from Best Buy that I really like. It's super easy to use. I got it because it's was the newer version of my old camera that I really liked.
If I had to do it again, I would get this one instead because it's easier to switch between camera and video (it's one button). The camera that I have has a dial on the top, it's not complicated to switch between camera & video but this camera would be a bit faster.
I have a Canon SD1100 and it takes nice sharp photos, however, the flash is pretty harsh when you're close up and too weak for farther away photos. It's great in daylight, though. I can't say I really recommend it, though, just because of the flash. I used to have a Casio (which I DO NOT recommend b/c 2 died on me) but I liked that it had a soft flash setting.

HTH!
I have a Canon power shot elph SD 500, but it's only 7.1 mpxls
I think that most of the Elphs are not 12+ mpxls. This is the second one that I've owned and also convinced my MIL, SIL & sister to buy their own, so you could say that I would recommend it

We just got a Canon Power Shot SX200IS and I love it. It's got 12.1MP and 12x optical zoom. It takes really nice photos. I used it at Todd's hockey game over the weekend and was able to zoom from the stands all the way to the bench on the other side of the ice and the photos were still very nice quality. It's definitely compact enough to throw into your purse too.
We found it at Costco and it came with a 2GB card. We hadn't shopped around much so I'm assuming we got a good deal at Costco (it was $319.99) but it had everything we were looking for, along with the good Canon reputation, so we snagged it!
I used a Canon Powershot SD1000 - not sure how many MP it is but if it's not the 12 MP that you want I am sure the next model/upgrade they've come out with is pretty nice.
I love it - it's compact but has enough custom settings that I can take the photos that I do for my food blog. it does have one button switch from picture-taking to video-taking mentioned above.
honestly, SLRs just intimidate me b/c I don't know how to use them. i'm sure i could vastly improve the photos in my food blog w/one but for now I am happy w/the quality of my pics there.
we also use this camera for vacation photos and haven't been disappointed w/the quality of the pics when they get blown up into MP albums
