homemade gift ideas

Hi All!

My DH and I are really trying to do creative gifts for Christmas (like everyone, we are very budget friendly this year). I saw a post on another board about making homemade Christmas tree ornaments as gifts this year.  Does anyone have any suggestions about this?

I am definitely NOT creative and struggle with arts and crafts but would like to give this a shot. What type of supplies would you suggest?  And what type of decorations would you suggest as well?

Also, anyone have some other homemade Christmas gift ideas out there?

Thanks!

Re: homemade gift ideas

  • if there is a local craft store near you (hobby lobby, michael's) they should have some simple homemade ornament/craft ideas.    i painted glass ball ornaments for my mom one year and she loved them.   all that i used was some puffy paint in a bottle and made my own designs as i went along.

  • Thanks! I didn't even think of going to hobby lobby! :)
  • My brother and SIL usually do edible Christmas gifts. They've done everything from bourbon balls to homemade Kahlua to a basket of Christmas cookies.

I usually knit or crochet something, ornaments included

I think homemade etched glass ornaments would be cool. You can google the technique.

  • X post or take a look at the crafts board, too.  They are always seeking or giving crafts ideas.  There are a lot of easy crafts to do.

You can buy less expensive plain items and dress them up with paint or fabric:  picture frames, glass ornaments, cookie tins (and place baked goodies inside)

You can buy iron on transfers and dress up a bag, or an apron.

You can make candles or soap.  Craft stores have supplies (This will cost a lot if you don't plan on making a lot of the same candle/soap though)

    Good luck!

  • I love the ornament kits from Herrschners - most of them are cheap, and they're easy to put together, in addition to being beautiful!

I LOVE this idea! I like to make/give homemade gifts but I sometimes wonder, what are they going to do with that after? But this is such a creative idea! I'm so going to do this one this year! Thanks for sharing! What else do you put in there?

Sorry, I just now checked the post! I actually found trays at Target that could be used for breakfast in bed. So instead of the baskets I am using those (one is red, one is white). I found batter bowls at Walmart that are red and white for $3. I put the pancake mix in the bowl and added a bottle of strawberry syrup, also from Walmart (Smuckers). I added a spatula, and also plan on adding a whisk. I am looking for some cute holiday kitchen towels to add. I am making coffee cake in a jar also. This is all I have so far! Here is the link for the hot chocolate, the pancake mix, and the coffee cake:
