What to serve after Baptism?

I'm having some trouble coming up with what to serve after a baptism next weekend.  I'd like to put together something nice without spending a ton of money.  We plan on having just some close family members over maybe 8-10 people.  This would be in the evening, church service at 5:30 and then coming back to the house afterwards.  Any ideas?

Re: What to serve after Baptism?

  • Lasagna, salad and garlic bread. Any pasta dish is cheap.
  • I'd do something that can be placed in a slow cooker so that it is ready when you get to your house.  Maybe scalloped potatoes and ham with rolls.
  • Ham, rolls, salad and potatoes sounds good to me. I just bought a ham today to stick in the freezer, they were on sale.  Seems like they go on sale here around holidays, not sure about where you live.  You can serve the ham hot or cold, and do either a hot side dish (au gratin potatoes) or cold (potato salad, salad) with it.
  • Thanks for the ideas ladies!  I think I am going to do a ham and the scalloped potatoes sound really good.  I looked through my grocery sales papers today and I did find some good deals on hams.  I might just buy more than one and keep another in the freezer for the future.  I really appreciate the ideas, I was just drawing a total blank when I sat down to come up with a menu earlier!
  • You could also do soups or stew if you live in a cold area.  I did a butternut squash soup (Barefoot contessa recipe) and a seafood stew, a big green salad and yummy crusty bread.  both soups were in the crock pots before we left, the salad was in the fridge, the table was set, so all we had to do was put out the appetizers when we got home.  Easy.

  • We had bar-be-que (pulled pork, chicken and beef, w/ beans, cole slaw and pasta salad on the side) It wasn't super cheap (I think it was $11 per person), but it was easy & inexpensive for "catering."  We picked up food from a ribs/bar-b-que place- they provided the plates, napkins, etc.  We had to invite a ton of out-of-towners and our ceremony was after the 11:30 service, so I didn't know how I was going to manage to cook something and get me and the baby out the door and to church on time looking decent if I attempted to cook.
