Things do do in Deadwood area
DH and I are going to Deadwood over Labor Day weekend for a wedding. I'm looking for suggestions on things to do, must sees, places to eat, etc in the Deadwood and Mt Rushmore. I posted this on the Travel board as well. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Re: Things do do in Deadwood area
Personally, I wasn't impressed by Deadwood. And, I was really looking forward to it. There were a lot of casinos around, a couple museums, but that was about it. We stayed for an hour or two and left (passing through).
However, we had a lot of fun staying down in Keystone (where you'll find Mt. Rushmore). We stayed a couple of days and explored Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and the surrounding area. If you can, try to take a quick trip to the Badlands - you should be able to make a small day trip to see them.
I'm orginally from the Spearfish area (right by Deadwood) and I concur with the pp...Deadwood can get boring. Sure, enjoy some of the casinos, some of the museums (try the Adam's museum), and venture to see Wild Bill Hickock's grave.
However, I'd spend more time venturing out to Mt. Rushmore and exploring Keystone. I took a ride on the 1800's steam train from Keystone to Hill City and thought it was really cool. I've also enjoyed some of the tourist trap things like The Maze and Cosmo's. If you have a car (I think you would if you're coming this way) I'd try to see the Needles highway..it's pretty neat. The Badlands are also really cool...a day trip for sure, but pretty neat.
Also, take the scenic byway through the Hills..and takes lots of pictures.
