Need easy appetizer ideas for evening party!
I'm hosting a get together tomorrow night for highschool friends I haven't seen since, well, high school (16 years ago!) The paty's at 6:30 p.m. so I want substantial, yet easy appetizers that will impress. I'm not being very creative. Any ideas? Thanks:)
Re: Need easy appetizer ideas for evening party!
6:30 is dinnertime, so it's your duty as a hostess to feed them dinner unless you've already told them all you're not giving a meal. Apps won't do.
Pork tenderloin's easy and feeds a crowd (McCormick Bag n Season always gets rave reviews when I do it and it takes zero effort), shrimp cocktail (you'd need a bunch for it to be a secondary protein), frozen mini quiche, Pillsbury frozen Savorings, cheese & crackers, veggies & dip.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
I think apps are fine as long as there's enough that won't leave them starving....make meatballs in the slow cooker (do you have M&M meat stores's in the states? if so I'd get the meatballs from there! there's uber easy and SOOO good), you can do sandwiches if you want something big (have buns, cheese meats so they can kinda make their own)...
I think apps are fine as long as guests can get a full meal off of them. Meatballs are good, small chicken salad sandwiches are good and can be mostly made ahead of time, make a pizza or two and cut into small squares, heavy dips like spinach and artichoke, phyllo cups filled with sauteed mushrooms and cheese, sausage bites with dipping sauces and chicken wings would help round out a meal.
You could also do a dish that is somewhere in between entree and app like do your meatballs but have subrolls on hand for sandwiches. Or grill up a bunch of chicken and veggie kabobs.

When I have a smaller group of friends over, I like to serve appetizers and drinks with a "theme."
Greek-style food is sounds good to me right now....you can buy frozen mini-phyllo cups and then just thaw them and fill them with a mixture of finely diced tomatoes and cucumbers with fresh mint or dill, a little feta cheese, a little minced red onion, olive oil, and salt and pepper. You can also buy hummus and pita wedges and roasted vegetables from the deli. For more substantial food, I would serve grilled or baked chicken and potato kabobs (boil the potatoes and cut into chunks, and skewer with chunks of chicken breast, marinate (or brush) with a lemon-oregano-olive oil mix and grill or broil). And wine, definitely wine.
I think that you can do apps so long as they lean on the heavier side. For something that looks effortless but is still impressive, here are some ideas.
Dates Wrapped in Bacon and Stuffed with Bleu Cheese
Spanakopita Triangles
Butternut Squash Galette
The dates can be stuffed and wrapped tonight and tomorrow, drizzle with honey, salt and pepper and shove in the oven.
The filling for the galette and the crust can both be made ahead of time, as well. Just slice into small pieces. I really love this galette because it has so much color and flavor. Very fall.
how many ppl? a sushi platter from your supermarket is impressive also a cheese platter with some grapes.
local asian also - like some wontons or egg rolls.
chicken or shrimp kebabs. can be grilled or baked.
meatballs with dip
bowls of mixed salads ie green salad, chicken salad with pita chips
or mini rolls around the chicken salad
buy nice additions like an olive tapenade with breadsticks.
a crab dip (there are different recipes) is also nice.
and a fancy store bought dessert - cheesecake!
I have two easy apps that I always do and that everyone always loves.
the first is a spread you serve with crackers. take a very flat plate and spread with cream cheese. then take a can of cocktail sauce an pour overtop-spread it even. then you can use either canned crab or i like the small frozen(thaw first) salad shrimp and pour/sprinkle over the top. Done.
2nd: Take sliced sandwich ham and spread with cream cheese. then use either a green onion (trimed) or I like blanched asparagus and lay on top of the ham-roll i up and you're done-Polish Roses!
good luck!
