New Orleans

DH and I would really like to go to New Orleans for our 2nd anniversary in mid December. Can you please recommend your favorite place to stay and things to do? Thanks!

Re: New Orleans

  • We have been a few times and loved staying at Le Meridien and the Hotel Intercontinental.  Both make it really easy to get most places in the heart of NO, like Jackson Square and Bourbon Street.

We did a vampire walking tour that was really fun, it met near Jackson Square just after dark.

We had dinner at NOLA once that was fantastic.  There are so many fun things to do there!

  • The Omni Royal Orleans is very nice and beautiful but it isn't cheap.  It is just 2 blocks from Bourbon.  If you aren't into loud, obnoxious Bourbon St. check out downtown or the Central Business District.  The Loews Hotel has a nice upscale bar called Cafe Adelaide and The Swizzle Stick Bar.  The International House Hotel is really nice too and all of these are walking distance to the Quarter. There are so many things to go, check out Audubon Park, the Garden District, check out some cemeteries but stay away from St. Louis Cemetery #1 at night, ride the streetcar, go to Uptown and check out the local bars where native New Orleanian's hang out, ride a carriage, etc.  I could go on and on......
  • I might be ghetto, but when I went we stayed at the Holiday Inn (80 bucks a night) off of whatever street bourbon turns into going towards the big stadium. It was literally a five minute walk to bourbon, the hotel was small but really nice, nice safe-feeling lobby and stuff, and with it being that cheap it was totally worth it. Also very close to another street (canal?) that was a main road with a trolley, a bunch of fancy stores, etc. Make sure you go to Cafe du Monde for the delicious beignets (no one elses' stacked up!)
  • Hey, what about that hotel we stayed at the first time Mona took us? Where they served the snacks at 10pm? It was really pretty and nice and a good location. Umm don't forget to eat at Cafe du Monde (you know right after a workout) and Two Sisters (multiple times).

  • If you want to do something festive, you could check out the "Celebration in the Oaks" at City Park. They decorate with tons of lights and it's very pretty.

You could go to Mardi Gras World. They offer tours to see floats that are being stored there for the upcoming carnival season.

If you go to Cafe du Monde, stroll further down the street to visit the French Market and Central Grocery. The Central Grocery is known as the inventors of the muffuletta sandwich and they make yummy stuffed artichokes too. Have fun!

  • Just to add to what's already been mentioned--I love walking along Magazine St.  There's lots of little boutique shops, antiques, and restaurants.  It's a great place to stroll and take in the neighborhood.  Lots of pretty homes around there since it's in the Garden district.

One of the main city parks (can't remember the name) has a really cool drive-through Christmas lights display, so you might want to research that, too.

  • Hello Mrs Schectman,

I lived in New Orleand for 2 years. The Hilton on the Riverwalk is not bad at all. Specially if you book it on price line dot com, name your own price. My DH and I stay there a couple of times for $50-$55.

The French Quarter is nice, but there is only so much to see. On Royal St there are all the Art Galleries. Once you have seen the French Market, Jackson's Plaza, the St Louis Cathedral and ate beignes at Cafe DuMonde; take the trolley down St. Charles, all the way down. You can stop by the Garden District, take the trolley again go to to the Audubon Park, take the trolley and keep going down to Carrolton. If you like mediterranean food Lebanon's Cafe it's the best you ever had, right on Carrolton and Jeanette.

The art museum by the City Park its beautiful too.

Enjoy and have a great time!
