Ravenswood

DH and I are considering moving from our current neighborhood (the south loop) to Ravenswood this upcoming spring.  There are several reasons for the move - we want a bigger place for a better value, would like an easier commute to work and we're hoping to find a good city neighborhood to start a family.

Anyone have any recommendations on the best areas to look and/or any restaurants/shops that you like?  Are there other neighborhoods we should consider?  DH works in Niles, but we want to stay in the city.  We wouldn't live in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Wicker Park.

Re: Ravenswood

  • roscoe village!!!!  I LOVE it!

Lincoln Square is nice too, it has a few more resturants than Roscoe Village...  Also the area around Damen and montrose has a few resturants and shops as well!   email me if you want more specifics on the neighborhoods!

  • I love Ravenswood - good choice.  I know you want to stay in the city, but I feel I need to plug Evanston.  I lived there for two years, and LOVED it.  I lived away from the University, but still close enough to town that I could easily access all the stores and stuff.

What about Edison or Jefferson Park?

  • We have considered Roscoe Village too!  I'll keep you posted on what we decide - we're just starting thinking about the move that will happen this March - we really want to love the neighborhood we choose.

I don't know a whole lot about Edison of Jeff Park - but I'll look those up too!

  • I lived in Ravenswood for almost 3 years before moving in with the hubs, I LOVE Ravenswood! I was by Wislon & Ashland, a few blocks from the metra, the brown line, and 2 busses that took me to Michigan Ave.

As for bars and places to eat, not much on the east side of Ravenswood. I would stay on the west side of the metra tracks, closer to Lincoln Ave, a ton of places on Lincoln between Montrose & Lawrence and such cute streets, very family-ish type of area. I found my apartment just by driving around but craigslist has a good amount of listings.

  • I would say you might also want to consider Andersonville as well, tons of restaurants!

  • Ditto Lincoln Square and Andersonville. North Center and Roscoe Village are nice too.
  • Yeah, Andersonville has a ton of stuff also, not sure on the apartments out there, but it's an older crowd (late 20's to late 30's)

  • I've lived in the Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area for the past 6 years and I absolutely love it. We live right by the Damen brown line and it is super close to the metra as well (2 blocks). We are within walking distance to lincoln square which is great for the restaurant choices and bars, but a little cheaper and better transportation where we're at. My DH worked in skokie for a while and commuted up lincoln easily. Supposedly, where the Sears parking lot is, a grocery store with gym and parking structure will be going up within the next 2 years as well. We have a favorite Italian restaurant (Caro Mio) 3 blocks away and there are a few bars and if you like Thai food Ravenswood and Lincoln Square are the place for you.

I would also say to consider North Center (near the Irving Park brown line and honestly anywhere west of ashland and east of rockwell, south of foster and north of irving seem to have some great options available. Good luck!

  • I don't know much about Ravenswood, but I can say that Roscoe Village seems to be an awesome neighborhood.  We have some friends who live there.  There are plenty of nearby restaurants, shops, and pubs.  There are a lot of young families as well as single professionals in the area.  Great deals there too!

  • I'm really excited to hear the great things everyone is saying about Ravenswood and the surrounding areas.  I think we're going to head up there and really check it out!  We're thinking of moving in March, so I'll keep everyone posted on the status.

  • i live in north center.  lots to do on lincoln, easy walk to lincoln square and roscoe village, and access to many buses and 3 brownline stops.  parking is plentiful and rent is cheaper.  good luck!
