Memphis & Nashville

Hi I am going on vacation to Tennessee at the end of this month. I have family in McMinnville but while there I wanted to go to Memphis & Tennessee. Besides Graceland and the Civil Rights museum is there any must sees for Memphis?? Where is the best Barbeque?? I like more of the local scene then tourist spots.

I am planning on going to BlueBird in Nashville - are there any other good places to hear live music in Nashville.  My husband has never visited Nashville where are good places to take him?

 Thank you!!!

  • Downtown on Broadway in Nashville are all the honky-tonk places which have live music. Check out Tootsie's Orchid Lounge or Robert's Western World or The Stage.

The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum is a very nice museum and interesting even if you don't really like country music. There is a lot of history, and it's very well-designed.

What kind of stuff are you interested in doing?

  • Book in advance for the Bluebird...
  • In Memphis I think you should go to Sun Studios, a recording studio where Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and many others were recorded. I think it's a fun tour and it's pretty quick too. People here go crazy over the ribs and what not at the Rendez-Vous downtown so I would definitely suggest trying there. I don't know if you're into art or not but they have an Andy Warhol display going on at the Brooks Museum for a while which I think is pretty neat. Another random place to visit might be the Beauty Shop (although I've never been there) in midtown which is a bar/restaurant that used to be the salon where Priscilla Presley got her hair done. My favorite place in Memphis, though not touristy at all, is the Swig martini bar downtown...kinda near Beale.

  • Depending on what time of week you will be in Nashville, you could try to hit the bluegrass nights at the Ryman. Lots of fun. Or you could go to the Listening Room in Franklin. I would urge you to get out of downtown Nashville if you can and go to Historic Franklin. Cute little tea rooms and shops. I also like Hillsboro Village a lot and always take out of town guests to Fido for breakfast. I concur with the previous poster about Rendezvous in Memphis. I have been twice. Its excellent!
