daycare costs in waukesha county

So I work in Waukesha off highway T (on grandview rd).  Husband works at Research Park in Tosa.

We are trying to find daycare options before we even TTC. Location we are looking for is either on highway 100 near RP in Tosa (so I can drop off in mornings before work) and DH can pick up OR a center in Waukesha near my work.  We have been married for 4 years are in our 30s, so we do not want to wait much longer and are thinking next year.

Here is the issue-- I work 8-6 every day... DH works 7-5 or 5:30... so if we go in tosa we need a center that is ok with 7:30-5:30 and if in Waukesha that is ok with 7:30-6:15 or later.  Note that both of us on occasion have to work even longer- so ideally I would want a center that is ok with charging a fee for late pick ups or early drop offs.   I read something that in WI that a center can not have a child for longer than 10 hours?  Why?

Also- what are avg costs?  From co-workers have heard that 1200 a month is what they pay?  Is this the going rate?    If it is a lot more for later hours... do you think a nanny would be better?  If so- how did you find one and what is the avg going rate for one?

Thanks so much!

Re: daycare costs in waukesha county

  • DS goes to Grandma's House in Tosa, it is located off of HW 100 at Watertown Plank Road. They are open from 6-6 everyday and I have never heard about a 10 hour limit, I think you can you have your child there anytime when they are open. Right now we pay $56 a day, which will go down a little once DS turns 2.  We have been very happy with them so far. They don't have late hours past 6 though, you would have to pick up by then.

  • According to our daycare center, your child can be in a daycare center for up to 10 hours (regular cost).  They charge an additional fee anywhere after 10 hours.  Legally, no daycare center in WI can keep a child more than 12 hours.  So you can pay the additional fee for 10-12 hours of care, but they won't be able to keep him/her more than 12 hours at a time.  I'm not exactly sure why, but if you look in the WI daycare rules...it's in there.  Hope that helps :)

  • thanks so much!  Very helpful
  • Your probably looking atleast 215 on average a week.

But if you are looking for a nanny I'm a full time nanny right now and I've found jobs on enannysource.com or nannies4hire.com or there are a few agencies in the area that are really good. But if you look on Craigs list you can probably find a SAHM or a in home day care just make sure to do your research on them.

  • You probably just need to start touring centers in the area.  They'll all have different hours and costs.  At our old center (All About Learning), they did have a 10 hour maximum, and I believe you were supposed to get charged extra beyond that.  Hours were also 6:15am-6:15pm, and they charged $10 every 5 minutes beyond closing time.  Infants up to age 2 were $245/week.  I think that's pretty average for a center in the area.

We ended up switching centers when I got a new job.  I looked briefly at in-home, but all three that I looked at were only open until 5 or 5:30pm, which isn't always doable.  Plus charges were $5-6/hour, which ends up being more than a center if the child is there for 10 hours/day.  Nanny costs are usually higher than an in-home too.

I found one of the best ways to search was just to use google maps.  That way you get to see the location of each place in relation to where your job or house is.
