mattresses

We're in desperate need of a new mattress and bed but finances are tough right now. But I want something that will last us a long time and is comfortable. So can you guys enlighten me with your purchases? I'd like to know:

What type of mattress do you have?

Where did you buy it?

Would you buy it again?

Re: mattresses

  • I've purchased a fair number of mattresses in the last 3 years (long story) and what I would suggest is to go to a mattress place (any will do really-- they ALL wheel & deal) and hop on a mattress, roll around, get in whatever your sleeping position(s) may be.

    Consider bringing your favorite pillow.

Seriously, kick off your shoes and get comfortable.

Go with your DH so he can do the same (you'll find that some mattresses have more bounce in them and when you or your DH move, it disturbs the other person and some that's less of an issue).

I like pillow top because I like a fairly firm mattress and the pillow top makes it softer without being mushy. For direction, ask the sales person and tell them what kind of sleeper you are - stomach, back, side, etc. Some are latex, some are latex / spring mix, some are just springs. They all have pros and cons so don't let anyone tell you one is necessarily better than the other.

Don't skimp on your mattress. A good mattress is heaven; a bad one won't last and you won't sleep as well.

I've yet to buy a mattress where I couldn't bargain. Pick your mattress and then pick a price (don't pick a $1000 and choose $300 as your price but you can go quite a ways). Let THEM start the bidding; this is important. If the mattress is priced at $1000, say to sales person, "It's priced at $1000, what's the best you're willing to give to me?"

    Salesperson says, "$900"

You say, "How about 750 and include a metal bedframe and free shipping / take away of my old mattress."

If $750 is reasonable, you can probably hold him to it (pick the lowest number you think is remotely possible, this is negotiation remember). He'll say no, hedge a bit, you get ready to walk, then he'll say he needs to call his manager, etc.

If $750 isn't reasonable, he'll say he can't go that far but he can give you $xxx. Then push him just a bit further.

Things to leverage - I'm planning to buy something today and if you can't give me the deal I want, I'll go elsewhere; while I want to buy today, I'm also not desperate; I'm willing to pay cash (if that's an option); I'm just starting to look and thought I'd check out the pricing at a number of other stores before I buy...  ------say any of these things as appropriate, some may be, others may not be. I've gone in and said I would like a new mattress but don't need one right away and then get really excited about a mattress and then appeared like I was going to walk away if the price wasn't good enough because I just don't want it badly enough...

  • All of what PP said.

I bought a Simmons Beautyrest about 4-5 years ago, and love it. It has indivudaually wrapped coils, so for me that means less "bounce", which is important b/c DH tosses and turns all night, and when we sleep on "regular" coil matresses, he annoys the crap out of me.

I personally don't like pillow tops, because they are too squishy, and we like a firmer mattress...My perfect blend was the tad-bit-firmer Beautyrest with a memory foam topper...I feel it's the best of both worlds.

Though, I think DH and I are both curious about the temperpedic mattress, and I'm curious about THIS Natural Sleep Store mattress that was featured on This Young House.  (but super pricey!)

Oh, and I think I paid $699 for a queen set (frame, box spring and mattress. I gave the box spring/frame away when we got a wood bed frame), and yes, I'd buy it again!

  • We needed a bed for our guest bedroom, and ended up with a Sealy Waterbrook plush queen from Costco.  It looks like they still carry it, for $699, but right now it's $599.  We also went ahead and bought the frame for it there, and that was $50?  I don't remember, but it wasn't super expensive.

We've only had it for a few months and it's not used very often.  But all of our guests love it.  We went everywhere looking for a mattress we both thought was comfy and this is the only one we could agree on.  We spent two days running around flopping down on beds.  We figured we try Costco as a last resort, laid down and we both looked at each other and were like "For real?"  : )

  • We have a Sleep Number bed and LOVE it.  It is amazing.  It was very expensive ($2400) but it has been great for the 5 years that we have used it.  I like a very firm bed and DH likes squishy soft.

I highly reccomend you go to as many bed stores as you can and try them all out.  Also, ask about the money-back policy, most big stores have a 30 day money back if you don't like it.  Sleep Number (Select Comfort) has always been great with customer service, we did the financing through them 5 years ago and have had 2 very minor problems with our bed since then, and they were very quick to fix both issues.
