Ice in a glass jar for a party?

I have two large jars that I want to use to serve drinks for a party. Ideally, I'd like to put punch in one, and ice in the other. Is there anything I can put underneath the jar that would be sweatproof to catch what I'm sure will be tons of drips as the ice melts throughout the party?

I don't want to buy a new ice bucket, but if you have any other ideas, let me know!

Re: Ice in a glass jar for a party?

  • That depends on how big. I am thinking that you could do a foil pie pan/pan and line it with cloth napkins/nice towels, but your jars might be too big for this. You could use the same napkins other places on the table to make it flow together (like in a bread basket, over a paint can for height.)

  • Do you have a round charger plate or round placemat that you could place underneath it?  Just an idea!  I always have this problem with my glass pitchers, but have just used a towel to keep wiping up all the condensation.

    Good luck on your party!

  • What about a table runner. We have one that's bamboo and cloth(Target) and we used it on the table. We had a pitcher of ice and water on the table and it worked well.
  • Not sure how decorative this would be, but I saw an idea in Real Simple where you use a collander to hold the ice and place it over a bowl to catch the water.  Again, might be not fancy enough for what you are looking for.

  • Could you put a towel underneath the tablecloth to absorb the moisture? (a shamwow would work great for this)

When I first read this, all I could think about was the uber skinny guy with the headphone piece a la Britney that yells "ShamWOW!". Good idea though. :)
