Can you freeze turkey?

DH and I got a free turkey at a supermarket. I figured I would make the turkey in a few weeks. Problem is that it is just the two of us and the problem is we live in a tiny one bedroom apartment so we can't have more than 2 or 3 guests.

Does turkey freeze well? DH LOVES turkey but that is a lot of turkey!

Re: Can you freeze turkey?

  • I have 2 in my freezer right now!
  • Sorry, I guess what I meant to say was after the turkey was cooked and everyone has had their share, how long will turkey hold for in the freezer?

  • Absolutely!  We freeze turkey all the time.

  • Absolutely. However, I find that after it's been frozen, it's better to use it in sandwiches or soups/stews than just a straight-up main course. Maybe I'm just defrosting wrong, but it tends to be  a little dry after freezing.

  • Yes-you can certainly freeze cooked turkey. On Thanksgiving, with only myself and DH, we usually cook a 15-18 lb. turkey ( I don't really know how to make small meals, usually a lot get frozen).

The next time we have the frozen turkey is for New Year's Day. After celebrating the night before, who wants to make a dinner from scratch? We just have the turkey, make mashed potatoes and have  a frozen veg, and we're set. It makes a nice dinner for New Year's Day.
