If you adopt a family for Christmas - ?

Where do you find them? I have not found a church I like since moving to L.A., and I have not seen any information just in general. They have general toy drives at my office building, but I'd like something a little more personal if I could.

My true ideal would be to find a family with foster or adopted children, but really I just want to help where I can. Anyone have any idea where I could start looking?

TIA.

Re: If you adopt a family for Christmas - ?

  • Do you have a homeless shelter in your area? I would ask there, they sometimes do things like this.

You can also go to a church and ask at the office even if you don't belong to the church...let them know that you've just moved to the area, you don't belong to a church yet but you'd really like to help out a needy family during christmas...they should be able to help you.

  • Salvation Army

See if your company does something. Ours works with 2 different charities where we buy gifts for families

  • Im a school teacher and we are always looking for ppl who can help out fam. during the holidays.

Try the local schools around your area. Check with their PTA program.

  • We do the Salvation Army one.  You can choose the size of the family you buy for and you are not required to buy for the parents, just the kids (although they give you information if you want to buy for the parents too).  DH and I have done it the last two years together.  One of our family traditions!

  • one of the community centers in our area does a program and we adopt ours through them. easy to work with and very appreciative of whatever you can give.
  • Try:

    The Dept. of Human Resources

    The Salvation Army

    Any Shelters or Abuse Centers

  • I work for a homeless shelter and altough our program is well taken care of by a local hospital every year, we do get calls from people in the community looking to help a family in need.

I think a great place for you to start would be a homeless shelter or domestic violence shelter.  You could even ask at a local church.  Some of our families get assistance from the schools their children attend.

Call the guidance counselor in your local school for information on how you might be able to help a family in your area.

  • Another website I post on (mothering.com) has a holiday helpers program.  I picked a local family whose wish list matched up well with my budget/etc.

I have all the stuff ready adn I need to deliver it soon!

  • We do Angel Tree every year. You buy a gift for a child whose parent is in jail. The parent writes a personal message on the gift. They tell you exactly what the child wants (medium sweatshirt for an 8 year old boy or baby doll for a little girl, etc). We love doing it! It's a Christian organization.

ETA: You can also adopt a family. Below is the website
