Silver Lake in Hollis.....nice???

Haven't been there yet - but we live in Brookline.  Sounds like the weather is going to be great this weekend - thinking of checking out the Lake......is it nice??

Re: Silver Lake in Hollis.....nice???

  • I haven't been since I was really little - my mom always used to complain how we'd (my brothers and I) always get sick after going there....years later, my SIL was working for a water testing facility and Silver Lake had some of the highest bacteria counts she had seen....guess that's why we always got sick....also, I heard rumors recently, that the changing rooms/bathrooms were filthy and that the state did a lousy job taking care of everything....

  • It's OK I guess.  The lake is small, and it can get crowded on nice days.  It is a State Park, so they have a small beach, picnic tables, BBQ pits, and a playground.

For a nicer lake to canoe/kayck or go boating we usually go to Baboosic Lake in Merrimack or Horace Lake in Weare.  They are much nicer, IMO.

  • Ladies -

Thanks so much for the feedback - much appreciated.  I"ll be sure to check out the others you recommended as well!

    Enjoy the weekend.

  • Clough State Park in Weare is also nice. I grew up in Hollis and would never set foot in Silver Lake. When I was little and did not know better, I would swim there. Now, I know better. It's dirty, scummy and not well taken care of.
  • There's a lake in Brookline that only residents are allowed at (used to be at least, I think it still is)- have you been there?  On nice days, like PP said, Silver Lake gets really crowded with larger groups.  Enjoy the weather!
  • I've heard that it is pretty nasty, actually. :(
  • We went Monday.  I went as a child and wanted to relive it with the kiddos.  I was disappointed.  Its rundown, they used to have a pretty long beach area going on.  The water smelled like poo..and it really shouldnt, given the rain the past two weeks the bacteria count shouldnt be high..you know? And there were DEAD snails everywhere.  floating in the water dead in the shell.  BLEH. I was afraid for Holden bc he recently had surgery 2w ago and I didnt want him to get sick, so I pushed him around in a snowtube so he wouldnt get wet.  We only went in the water that once and then washed up and had a picnic and left. Grossness.
  • I went once with the kids when we first moved here.   After a turd floated by (literally a piece of poo) i got the kids and we left... havent been back in the 7 years we have lived her.  NEVER will
