Are you racist?

As my favorite song in Avenue Q goes,

Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.

So spill it nesties. What are you racist about? What stereotypes to do find yourself using? Do you make off color jokes?

Re: Are you racist?

  • I think you (and Avenue Q for that matter) may be confusing the term racist with having stereotypes. I'm certainly not racist and have never made an off color joke. That said, I (and everyone else) stereotype based on a wide array of things. Stereotyping is a cognitive shortcut and doesn't have to be acted upon in any one way or another, positively or negatively. I did my undergrad thesis on this, so it's a fascinating topic for me.

  • I'll admit I fall prey to some stereotyping that I shouldn't. I'm surprised I ended up as open-minded as I did coming from my region. My sister is in an interracial relationship right now, and she's now the black sheep of the family. So it's now my job to half defend her and try to point out how prejudiced they sound.

  • I joke sometimes but it's more about myself.  I'm 1/2 Korean so if someone says something like "you must be good at math" for instance I usually respond with "just my right side...my left side sucks at *fill in the blank*."

I also lock my doors if I am driving in certain areas that are a little sketchy (okay I used to manually lock my doors until I got a much nicer car that does it as soon as I move it out of park).  Sure I grip my purse a little tighter if I am walking in an area where the people are a little scary looking...but I don't discriminate by race it's by whoever is creeping me out!

  • Yeah I paused when typing that. :)

I actually agree with this, I used the term more to provoke a discussion that to actually imply that anyone was racist. I was hoping to provoke a discussion on the board. I don't consider myself racist but find myself quite often putting people into stereotypes. However, I recognize and am aware of my biases which I think it a huge step in the right direction.

So my next question along this topic to the board is this, what do you think when people say they are colorblind and don't see race?

They are full of crap (This reminds me of the office).  I think it's important to recognize the fact that people are different and it's what makes them unique.

  • I am guilty of telling a few blonde jokes in my time. Sorry blondes!!
  • Mofe: My thoughts exactly. I'm so tired of people saying, "I don't see race". First of all, yes you do, and second, that is a good thing! We should celebrate our differences and the ways in which each person contributes to the richness of our society.

  • I like to think I'm not racist.  Maybe just kidding myself?  I certainly make judgments, but I like to think they're based on other factors.  For example, most creepy rapists are middle aged white men.  If I see one coming towards me, I would certainly cross the street to walk next to the young, well-dressed black man any day of the week.
