Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

All this Christmas talk gave me the sudden urge to go through past Christmas pictures. Looky what I found....a picture from our first Christmas as Mr. & Mrs. <<<cue "awwwww's" & sappy love music>>>

image

I am aware that our tree is extra lame-o and skinny, but I wasn't working with a whole lot of space there. Anyway, I've decorated the tree pretty much the same way since then (the past 3 years) and I'm thinking maybe I want something different this year. What do ya'll do? Add to the ornaments you already have, or does your tree get a new look/theme each year?

Re: Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

  • Same decor every year.  Of course, I always buy a few new ornaments, but all with the same theme: red, white, silver.

  • And, just b/c I didn't put up my village last yr, and totally regret it, here's a picture to get me inspired to build it this year!  MIL told me she had a few houses to added to my village.  Now, where should I place it to fit it all?

  • Well, I usually do my tree all metal tones with a hint of red, but this year i really want to add some green (mostly because I saw the most adorable green ornaments at Pier One that I MUST have). I like eclectic ornaments, all different shapes and sizes and I collect new ornaments every year. I love looking back at the ornaments we've collected over the past six Christmases :)

  • My mom sets up her little vilalge every year and somehow manages to find space for all the new pieces she gets even though we always swear there's no room for another little tree! Somehow, she manages. She also has some pretty rockin' Christmas decorations that she gets to display around the house. Makes me kinda jealous actually. Lucky for me, I don't live in Miami anymore so I don't get to see her jealousy-inducing decorations each year (haha)...but as an extra added bonus this year, she's going to be up here in my neck of the woods starting tomorrow, so I can make her do all the Christmas decorating in my house and make sure it all looks extra pretty. I am seriously lacking in the Christmas decoratios department, so I'm hoping we'll get a chance to run out and pick up a couple things.

  • And I love your trees! When I get home, I'll have to look for pictures to share :)

Pictures please!! Also, DH and I started a Christmas tradition where we exchange an ornament when we first got married. It's always fun to see what our new special ornament on the tree is (plus, it helps build up our ornament collection since we get 2 new special ornaments a year). Our first year, we went together and each picked out an ornament for each other and put it on the tree that night. The second year we wrapped it up and waited until Christmas day to open it and add it to the tree. Last year we just added ours to the tree and had a mini "ornament hunt" around the Christmas tree until we each found our ornament. Not sure what we'll do this year though.

I guess now with Carley, we'll be putting up 3 ornaments this year. I can't wait! :)

  • I little traditon I started was buying an ornament frame with the year on it engraved (most places have them already).  It will be great to see how how we age through the yrs!  By the time we are 60, we can prob decorate the tree w/ only frames!  LOL

  • I love this thread! It makes me feel warm and fuzzy. ;)

Our tradition is always buying a special ornament that relates to something that happened that year, and so far, that's been pretty easy. We had our first married Christmas ornament, our first Christmas with our dog (cheesy, but fully necessary), our first Christmas in Florida. Now this year we're looking for one of our first home.

I really love the tradition of buying each other a special ornament, then hunting for it. We might have to start that...

  • This is a great post! Last year was our first year as a married couple. DH was convinced that the tree needed to be filled with ornaments from top to bottom. But I explained that the fun of each Christmas is acquiring new ornaments each year - you don't buy them all at once.

So here is our little tree. I bought an angel topper, but DH said it looked a bit scary. So I'm still in search of a tree topper this year. :)image

  • Our tree is always the same. Red, White, Silver, and Green...I add new ornaments every year...

Our first tree was pretty sad looking. The only ornaments I had where ones that I brought with me from Mi and the tree was definitely a little charley brown tree. (I'll have to see if I have pictures of it.) Our neighbors felt so bad about our little tree that the next year they upgraded to a bigger one and gave us theirs...and then the year after that my MIL upgraded hers and gave us her older one...So for the past couple of years I have upgraded without having to go out and purchase one.  With the bigger trees of course I had to go out and get new ornaments (which I was happy to do) I love christmas time

  • I think your tree is cute. We usually just add more things each year. A great wy to change up the look without spending extra money is with ribbons, or funky accesories like feathers.
  • How many of you put candy canes on your tree? It's one of my family's traditions up north. Anyone use garland or tinsel?

    I do!

  • UMWife- I love your color scheme! That is exactly what I am going for for my tree this year!

Michael's has some great toppers!  I too was in search a couple of yrs ago for a pretty one, and ended up finding the perfect one at Michael's, and a great price too!

My mom puts up the candycanes, but I'm not a huge fan.  I do put up a garland with red and silver small balls.  Actually, last yr, I didn't have enough garland and thankfully Target still sold the same one!  I had to get 2 more.  LOL

Thanks, Jackie! I love Christmas villages and can't wait to see how you arrange it this year. How many years have you been collecting?

  • Virginia, as always, I'm so impressed with your table setting in your pic with the tree. That isn't to say your tree isn't great (it is!), but your table settings make me swoon. :)

Big Smile Thanks! And one of these years we'll get serving dishes and bowls that actually match. Everyone could use those, right? They have the cutest holiday serving ware at HomeGoods, but I'm always hesitant to purchase it, because well, you only use it once a year and have to store it somewhere.

  • Virginia - I agree with Melissa, your table setting is adorable! I'm loving those red and white snowflake napkins...sooo adorable and perfectly festive! Speaking of table setting, I saw some really nice serving dishes at Walmart of all places! And they were'nt too expensive either. They had a nice set that white with a gold trim, so you can always use it for other events...not just Christmas. I think Target has some too :) As for a tree topper, I've done big bows with a couple different types of ribbon and then let the remaining ribbon flow over the tree from the bow. Our first Christmas we used a star as our topper. I love the one we have. It's gold wire and it's sparkly. Plus, I felt like it fit pretty well with the rest of the tree. Good luck!

JennyLo - Thanks! I figured red and gold were safe Christmas colors, right? I did a mix of matte and shiny balls so it wasn't all the same...and of course the little rustic ornaments. I think DH was just glad I didn't come with green and orange ornaments that year. LOL (I'm a Canes fan -- obviously -- and DH is a Noles fan)...you have no idea how interesting college football season is at my house!

cocojack - I love the idea of jinglebell garland. I might try that instead of the ribbon this year. Very cute idea!

  • Jackie - I loooove your little village! That is definitely on my list to start collecting this year!

and Arrgg, I forgot to look for pictures.

I haven't started a village yet...primarily because I have no idea where I would set it up if I did.

Haha... You know, I hadn't thought that far ahead either. Logistics like space and location don't phase me.

THANKS!  My mom used to set it up years ago, and bought a few pieces after Christmas one yr, and then colleced from there.  We used to set it up underneath the tree.  But it never was put up for like 6-8 yrs!  So, 2 yrs ago, while she was cleaning out her storage room, she found them and just passed them along to me!

I set them up on the coffee table of the living room.  Since we don't have kids, yet, it worked just fine... except on Chrstmas Eve that all the kids came over and started to touch it!  All the moms were all freaked out taking some extra precautions watching over them.  LOL

This yr we aren't hosting Noche Buena, so it is all good... it is going up again.  =)

I actually already told Dh that he could start bringing down the decorations this wk, so I'm ready next wkend!

  • Virgina- Love love love the table decor! I too wish I could splurge on the Christmas plate sets at homegoods. I just have no idea where I would store them.

Speaking of storage.....I dont know why I did this but I have bought so many kitchen towels this year. They seem to catch my attention. Holiday ones, colorful ones, black and white ones and I just purchased a monogrammed set on etsy to hang from my oven just for pretty. Well, I have nowhere to store them! My "kitchen towel" drawer is overflowing. What on earth does someone do with so many kitchen towels? I must be going crazy lol

OMG I have a dish towel obsession too!  I have one for each "holiday."  Luckily, I have loads of pantry space for storage of my towels.  I do want to buy a storage box to keep them better organized though.
