Rec. your global ready cell phone
We don't go overseas very often (but would like to more in the future!) and I'm due for my 2-year upgrade anyway (Verizon), so I'm looking at global ready phones. I've only ever had a basic flip phone, but wouldn't mind trying out smartphone.
Re: Rec. your global ready cell phone
I know that Verizon doesn't have very many global ready cell phones, and since I'm not on Verizon I couldn't give much advice in regards to those.
If you are planning on going overseas a lot, though, why not switch from Verizon to either AT&T or T-Mobile? They use the same GSM technology that most overseas telecom companies use, so you can use any phone they have overseas (with a small extra fee for international roaming, of course).
We are on Verizon, and my DH had a Blackberry that he uses internationally. We used it in Paris, and he has used it all over South and Central America (Chile is the only country he didn't have service). With Verizon, you have to unlock global calling and pay a fee, and I'm not sure about using European SIM chips in it, since Verizon phones tend to be pretty locked down. He just uses Verizon's partner networks when he travels.
As the PP said, I would definitely consider another provider if you will be going overseas often. You will have a better choice of phones and almost certainly have the option of getting local service when you travel instead of roaming or paying international rates (If I recall correctly, you can often buy prepaid SIM chips with local service in European countries).
