Attention Deficit Disorder?

Does anyone have any experience with ADD and perhaps some recommendations for specialists in the area?

Re: Attention Deficit Disorder?

  • I don't know much about ADD/ADHD but you might do a search on urbanmamas.com They talk about everything there it seems. If there isn't a current post, there's probably an older one that might be helpful.
  • Are you looking for tx options for an adult or child? Either way, it is important to focus on behavioral changes (basically working with the individual to find tools that will help him/her navigate life with ADHD). Medication can be particularly helpful with children, assuming the disorder really is affecting function. It can help ensure the child can learn and use some of those behavioral tools, but isn't a stand-alone solution, IMO.

There are a lot of specialists in Portland, and I don't have any to specifically recommend. If you have insurance, I'd recommend seeing if they'll cover a licensed therapist who specializes in the behavioral component, and then getting a recommendation from your primary dr for a specialist (probably a psychiatrist- I'd want someone who frequently focuses on ADHD rather than a PCP) who can work with you on the medication component, if necessary.

  • Hey you!  If your concern is for a child, I would start with a visit to their pedi and go from there.  Most ADD diagnoses that I see in teaching involve the child's regular doctor at least in the beginning.  If your concern is for an adult, I'd start with their primary care physician & get referrals.  Good luck & hope you're hangin' in there!  :)
