Relocation Question...opinions helpful:)

Hello,

We are considering a relocation to Florida and are looking for the good areas to raise a family that also has affordable real estate. Basically we are looking for quality schools, low crime and a decent real estate market...any ideas?

Thanks!

Danielle

Re: Relocation Question...opinions helpful:)

  • Somplace other than FLorida??? Wink

Teasing...sort of! I'm sure there are places here that fit all of that, but I'm not sure Central Florida is your best bet. If I had it my way we would move OUT of Florida!

  • Is there another reason aside from the heat that everyone says that?? I love it down there, and am curious as to why no one ever seems to like the sunshine state:)

  • I think you can find neighborhoods that fit your criteria in Central Florida, it just takes quite a bit of homework. I was looking for the exact same things you are, and I ended building in an area of Clermont. We were also looking at certain areas of Winter Garden. The problem with Winter Garden (and I'm sure it applies to other areas as well) is that there are good schools and not so good schools, so you have to be very specific with the neighborhoods you look at.

I've heard some good things about St Cloud and other areas just outside of Orlando, so hopefully someone with more expertise than I will step in. :)

I grew up in Michigan, and I MUCH prefer Florida. That being said, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Housing is much more expensive down here compared to where I'm from, and the schools aren't as good. But for me, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

  • Well, I've lived in Florida my whole life and love it. But Florida is a BIG state and you have to decide where you want to live. I'm assuming since you posted this on Central Florida - that is an area you are considering.

I've lived in Miami (South Florida), Jacksonville (North East Florida) and now Clermont (Central Florida).

In Clermont - just west of Orlando - the job market is tough. I'd recommend having a job before you move. The housing market is in flux. There are many homes going through foreclosure - so there is the chance of getting a good deal. But if you want to deal with short sales, you could be up in the air for months. There are plenty of places to build as well.

Do you want public or private schools? There are some great private schools in our area. As far as public schools - narrow down some areas and I'm sure we can get your some personal opinions.

  • I also grew up in FL and  loved until I moved out of FL 15 years ago.

We recently moved back after being away for 15 years and my husband and I are not thrilled with Florida.  We are down here only because of DH's job.

Things that we miss that I don't see in FL are: sense of community, no small-town feel, all the homes look the same, lots of crime.  We live in the Heathrow/Sanford area.

Of the areas that we have seen here--we have liked Winter Park.

I would highly recommend renting for a year to see how you like it.

  • Orange county doesn't have the best public schools overall as compared to Seminole county. Most of east Orlando does have all "A" rated schools though. Neighborhoods include Waterford Lakes, Avalon, Stoneybrook and Eastwood. If you have any other real estate questions you can send me an email at realtorerica at yahoo.com

Good Luck and happy home shopping!
