Re: Irvine? (Questions from an ATL nestie)
Would you recommend it? I know it gets great reviews, how is the job market? I'm in the legal field. What about traveling? Major airports? Things to do? Basically I want a first person perspective. I can read about it online all day, but I would rather hear someone tell me how great it is (or isn't)
thanks.
would i recommend it- i live in irvine and have for the past 9 years and its a great place to live (clean, organized, streets are wide, lots of parks good schools) Job market- I dont have any info on that there- but i do have friends that are lawyers and they all work within 10 miles of home. Airports- closest one is SNA about 10-15 mins away depending on where you are in irvine (it serves mostly domestic flights) if you are going to do international you would most likely have to go to LAX.
things to do.. not much... its a family community- many places close by 10pm there are some late night spots but not many. UCI is also here so there are college students around the college park area.
only two semi con i can think of.. is that is it a very ethnic diverse community many people are asian, middle eastern etc. and that may be a culture shock to some. the other one is that irvine is all very cookie cutter.. no real character in the homes but it makes for a organized facade.
I work in Irvine and used to live here. It's very central, IMO, to shopping, restaurants, close enough to LA and San Diego if you want to take day trips. Lots of restaurants within decent driving distance, beaches are 10-15min away. Very family friendly. Seemed like a safe neighborhood to run, walk, take the dogs or kiddos out for a stroll. Most people, at least in my experience, are pretty laid back.
Legal field. I know of firms, both small and large and everything in between, that are hiring at the administrative level. But the number of applicants are high. We were interviewing for a legal secretary and receptionist and received apps from probably over 100 people over just 2 days of posting it so we took it down. For lawyers, I think it really depends on what type of experience you have and where you went to school and where you've worked prior. Employers have the flexibility to be picky right now with so many lawyers out of work.
uh, really? I would think it's quite the opposite, especially for someone coming from such an urban area as ATL.
yes! im chinese... and sometimes think damn you crazy drivers everywhere! they also dont call uci the university of chinese immigrants for no reason :P

not trying to start a fight, I was just curious myself and wanted to make sure I wasn't putting my foot in my mouth.
I was going to say I dont think Irvine is any more culture diverse than anywhere else in southern CA. This area is a melting pot so its something thats to be expected no matter where you live out here.
I work in Irvine and it is very suburban and cookie cutter. If you want suburbia, Irvine's your place but if you are looking for something a bit more youthful, you might want to consider some other local cities around Irvine. For raising a family, the school systems in Irvine are one of the best so that's something to keep in mind but also keep in mind that bc its such a sought after school system, you're going to pay a bit more to live in Irvine than some other neighboring cities. Ultimately guess it comes down to what you're looking for...
I don't live in Irvine, but I work here and it's a pretty decent place. Very clean and suburban. I'm not sure what area of ATL you're coming from, but I do kind of think of Irvine as very "vanilla." Lots of businesses and retail amenities. It's right next to Costa Mesa, which has an arts district and South Coast Plaza, as well as being close to John Wayne Airport.
It seems like a lot of law firms have a presence in Orange County, but I have no pulse on that market.
I have not noticed an overwhelming cultural infusion going on.
Thanks ladies! This is really helpful! We should know something soon, just sitting tight for the time being
