Hotel & Restaurant/Visitor Recommendations?

Hi San Diego Nesties,

I am taking a vacation there in January.  I would love any recommendations as far things to do or places to stay.  Especially places with a nice pool, although I am not certain it will be warm enough?

TIA!

Re: Hotel & Restaurant/Visitor Recommendations?

  • Most pools are heated, and people do swim in January, but I'm not one of them!

What are you into?  Do you want to be in downtown or near the beach?  My favorite and most centrally located hotel is the Hilton in Mission Bay.  The pool is awesome, and you can walk around Mission Bay Park.  It's centrally located, so you are near dowtown/zoo/Balboa Park south and La Jolla/Del Mar north.

For restaurants, check out Confidential in the Gaslamp for happy hour.  Their happy hour runs from 5 to 8 almost every day (double check their site) and everything is 50% off.  It's our favorite happy hour place so far.

Blue Boheme in Kensington is awesome as well. It's French, but with a laid back atmosphere.

Hillcrest has many good restaurants, depending on what you like.  Baja Betty's is a fun atmosphere and they serve Mexican.  For Thai, Amarin Thai in Hillcrest is pretty good.

I'm sure someone will recommend Hash House, but I personally hate that place.  It's basically huge portions of pretty bad food, but if you like to eat a lot then you might enjoy it.  I think they were featured on some show because all my visitors ask to go there, and all were disappointed so far.

Babycakes is an awesome cupcake spot, and the people that work there are awesome.  Heaven Sent Desserts in North Park is great as well, but they tend to sell out of stuff so be sure to call ahead.

One of our new favorites is the West Coast Tavern.  It's more tapas style than full meals, but everything there is really good.  That's in North Park. And speaking of tapas, Costa Brava in Pacific Beach is our favorite tapas place in the city.

While here, try an acai bowl for breakfast.  You can get the best one at The Big Squeeze in Pacific Beach. It's basically acai, blended and served with fruit, granola and honey and really good.   Another good spot for breakfast is Cafe 222 downtown.    The peanut butter french toast is so good!

For a nice dinner with an awesome view, Island Prime is excellent.  They not only have the view, but good food as well.

As far as things to do, Balboa Park is a must.  You can wonder there for hours.  The zoo is right there as well, so you can do both at once.

It won't be warm enough in January to lay out on the beach, but you can definitely go walk around.  La Jolla Shores is nice, but a nicer beach in La Jolla is Windansea.  You can walk or rent a bike and ride from Pacific to Mission beach on the boardwalk, and go for a hike at Torrey Pines.

If you tell me what you're interested in (outdoors, nightlife, etc.), I can suggest more specific things.
